November 20, 20178 yr Popular Post Well, yard sales are over around here, until next spring.....there is a store downtown that has a basement section...called Junk Rescue... Finally had a little extra in my pocket.....decided to buy a few items... Sooo, THIS is what $20 + Tax will get ya.... Might need a little clean up....Chisel? Sold as "Clearcut" 1-1/4" wide Firmer Chisel....that rusty gear box? On the now cleaned crank handle.....Defiance...Made in USA...need a few drops of oil to get things moving.... Yep, two bits for a dollar.....inflation? They did clean up nicely.. Three are 4/16", one is a 5/16" Left a few things down there, but....save those for another day.
November 21, 20178 yr Sweet scores...Nice looking chisel; appears someone had already made a very nice replacement handle. Defiance Eggbeater made by Stanley dates it 1952 or older. Stanley dropped the Defiance brand line during the summer of 1952. It was considered a less expensive line than the Stanley brand targeted more toward home owners and farm & ranch. Most of the line remained after 1952 but was re-branded Handyman along with the North Bros. line purchased in 1946. Defiance brand colors were Red/Black. It sure looks identical to the old Stanley 1221 other than the colors. Edited November 21, 20178 yr by Grandpadave52
November 21, 20178 yr Author Chisel and handle were in different boxes....merely combined the two....shhhhh! Need to find the "lens" to read the markings on the drill bits.....some are single flute, some are double flutes.
November 23, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Ok, updated pictures? Chisel Logo....."Clearcut" may have been a bit more in an arch above this? Have a panel saw with about the same logo.. All cleaned up, and ready to go. Need a can of black enamel for the handles... Camera doesn't do "Macro" all that well. DEFIANCE Made in USA Red may need a touch up? Chisel was $7, Drill was $10 Drill bit that WAS in the chuck had been broken at one time.....wasn't worth keeping around. Only stopped at one of the stores downtown......not too bad?

Also removed what paint that remained, sanded with Green Scotch-Brite and applied BLO straight-up because I had that and not the black paint at the time; For the red, I often use IH-Farmall red, (Rural King-Rustoleum version) mainly because I had some on hand; Probably make the purists screech, but oh well, when they own it, they can redo it. Just me and my preferences
November 25, 20178 yr Author Chisel has been cleaned up, handle now fits a lot better, had to redo the edge.... Edge was out of square a bit. Handle is now a tight fit...back has been polished and flattened.. Managed to bring out the etch a bit.. As for that chuck showing up? First coat. I also painted the drive gear.. Then wire wheeled the excess red off....once all the paint was dry ( used the paint on my fingers as a guide) I put the drill back together.. Looks a little better? Back view? Then it was hung up in the til... Where it can stay out of trouble.....I also hung the rehabbed mitre saw in it's spot.. Right next to it's twin. Not too bad of a day...
November 26, 20178 yr AWESOME refurb on the drill...looks used but not abused and neglected... Everything looks happy in their new home... More history preserved...wish they could tell their stories...
