vise leather

Featured Replies

Good morning guys, over the weekend I added some suede to the inside of my woodworking vise using Scotch 77 super glue which doesn't hold well enough for my liking.

Couple questions, I bought some heavier leather now and am wondering what to attach it with? I've read two sided tape Titebond glue, as well as some Titebond hide glue. Can anyone share their personal experiences?

Second question is it any better to put leather on both sides of the vise?

Thanks Pat

I don't know, but "hide glue"has a bit of irony, doesn't it?

Keith's tongue in cheek suggestion just might be the ticket. I'd want some give in the adhesive and hide glue is probably more flexible.

And, covering both jaws would be best.

contact cement...

rubber cement used as contact cement...

your 77 as contact cement...

2 thin applications of glue to your leather and the same to the vise jaw faces..

1st coat let dry (not tacky) to the touch.. 2nd coat let dry till tacky..

I'd be tempted to attach the smooth/finish side of the leather to the jaw; probably better adhesion.  The "heavy duty" (carpet) double sided tape is pretty robust (it's the stuff with the fine-thread webbing).  Tears wood fibers out.

Explain what you have been messing up with the vise jaws for you to be considering something soft attached to the jaws??

When I am trying to keep from scratching things I usually use long smooth pieces of hardwood on each side of the wood being worked on.. I find making the vise jaw area much larger seems to help more than anything else..

You have any pictures of your problem?

All of the above should work. If you use the tape close the vise with leather attached and leave for at least 30 minutes, more may be preferable.

I found that something soft like leather doesn't hold things very tight in the vise. Sharp edges will indent clear through the leather to the metal behind, Maybe wood layer ,or wood layer first then the leather. I prefer just a wood pad.

I'm with Gerald on this, regardless of what is used tighten up a  2X something wide as jaws, let it dry overnight.
