Ive been a bit under the weather this week so today is my first day working in the shop. Yep, I am now officially way, way behind. But I'll get things done as I can and not spend a lot of time worrying about it.

 

Today I am working on a Pistol Shadow box that I've got to ship to Michigan this week so it is there for a presentation on Wednesday night. I know, I am under the "gun".

 

 

I'll get it sprayed tomorrow and then install the glass and get it boxed up and ready to go. Almost there!

 

This box is going to house an antique pistol that will be presented on Wednesday night.

 

 

I'm also working on a pair of grips for a SIG SAUER P380 made of Purple Heart.

 

 

They are cut out and drilled, just got to do a little shaping and then using the laser engraver put SIG SAUER on one side and the customers Initials on the other side in the same font and the same slop as the SIG logo. I will probably be working on those Sunday afternoon. No deadline on them so I can take my time.

 

I also got a new Glock 19, Gen 5 the other day after the reveal at our range. I really like it and shoots very well.

 

This was my first 50 rounds put through the gun at 10 yards.

 

Probably going to catch a little College football Saturday, RTR!

Just got back from the saw mill with some maple and birch for a couple of projects. Yes, my sister is still trying to buy my way into heaven!

Went to the range yesterday and my 10", 6" and 4" steel did not look like yours ,but we were shooting at 25 yards.

Continuing to work on plaques. Now with the process down I may be able to get 2 or 3 fitted per day.

Got started on the "Little Free Library" today.   As usual some cuts, some design, repeat.   Even though I had made a full-scale drawing, seeing the wood in front of you makes a difference.   I got the roof, sides, doors, gothic windows cut and stained glass cut and ready to go in.

 

Tomorrow morning to the furniture bank to make some tables and repair a damaged one from a furniture store.   Afternoon and evening is hauling the theater set from the workshop to the theater and starting to get set up.   Sunday noon  is dinner at church and then more set moving in the afternoon and evening.

 

Monday morning, I'll be tired.

Last week I had an older gentleman contact me about building a cradle.  About 25 years ago, he bought 2 cradles from the Amish for his grandchildren and now wants one built for the young man that is running his large farming operation.  Seems the Amish builder is long since dead so he gave me a couple of pictures with sketchy dimensions and the phone number of his son in law who owns one of the cradles.  Luckily, the SIL supplied me with better pictures via and iPhone and more dimensions.  So, today I started cutting raised panels while I wait for the spindles that I have ordered.  The original cradles were cherry but the farmer suppled walnut that came from his property.  I have to admit I'm a bit perplexed how to recreate the cradle pivot.  If you have any idea, send them my way.

@Ron Dudelston My FIL built something with that pivot for our second child, but he enlarged the plan and it was almost impossible to use. Finally my wife let me repurpose it and there are parts in several things in the house including the spindle sides are a dog fence.

       The pivot is fairly simple. It must be centered on each side for balance. He made ours with a dowel maybe 1.5 inch diameter which was placed in from the outside thru the upright and into a collar on the end of the crib.

Not so much on the pivot Ron, but looking at the picture, I suggest a lot more spindles spaced much closer together for safety purposes. There is a "rule of thumb" for proper spacing, but I'll have to do some digging to recall it.

Only two scheduled round trips to the HS tomorrow AM...no volleyball tourneys this weekend...I need to start mowing...flipped a coin to determine if I started today or tomorrow...start tomorrow...It took five flips but that's how it came out.

 

Various stages of some RIPs (Refurbs in Process) from the past couple weeks...I have a few others going too, but they were too shy at portrait time. I hope to find some more time this weekend to continue. 

 

Red Handle, Millers-Falls #100 (Buck Rodgers) push drill; #4217 Dunlap push drill (uses the same Goodell-Pratt +style bits that the M-F uses)

A pair of machinist double slot V-blocks but only one clamp...Stanley 102 Block plane, Dunlap block plane, no number

 

Stanley 102 appears to be all original...I don't think the iron has ever been sharpened but does have  couple small nicks. I have some pics somewhere

before I began any clean-up...The Dunlap was in a bucket of stuff I bought some time back...The iron adjusting knob was in paint at picture time

The Dunlap is pitted pretty bad...I need to spend some more time with a much coarser grit. The #102 is not too bad, but needs more work yet.

 

Didn't take any before pics on the V-blocks , but the clamp was rusted stuck to the bottom block. 24 hours soak in Evap-O-Rust...still need to do 

a lot of polishing/lapping yet...

Craftsman 0-2" outside caliper...circa late 50's to mid 60's...25 cent purchase.  Needs some work...

 

First coat on a variety of arbor wrenches...I prefer yellow for visibility...most were pretty rusted; I pick these up for 10 cents to a dollar each or sometimes

lumped in a box or bucket. The four on the far right are from my (2) old Craftsman RAS's.  and my old 9" Rockwell TS.  They need another coat, but I

ran out of paint so I'll have to wait 7 days now to prevent alligatoring. You never can have enough arbor wrenches right?

 

In case I misplace one for my circular saws...Hey everybody collects something...You probably don't want to know some of the other odd-ball tools I hoard collect.

 

Found a couple before pics...Dunlap 4217...pretty rough...appears in partially laid in water for some time...I gave $1.99 for it...has all but the 1/16" bit.

 

Stanley 102 pre-scrubbing on the stationary belt sander...I gave $2.99 plus tax for this...

In many cases no I don't Richard, however this area excepted. Having personally known two unrelated families to tragically lose a child from strangulation is enough to convince me on this standard...

planning on turning a bowl later today, it will be a little "thank you" present to the lady that is letting me and dad hunt on her ranch next month in Wyoming.  we both have 2 deer tags to fill.  yum.

 

went to the range yesterday for some pistol practice first.  ran thru the IDPA classifier twice, also met a friend who also shot that course twice with my VP9.  he's considering getting one, so this was good exposure to how that pistol shoots.  slightly improved my best ever score, i'm still 7 seconds from Expert.  if i can shoot stages 1 and 2 cleanly, where i was down 11 total, i'm there.

 

also got in some rifle practice, checked the zero on my hunting rifle and did some offhand and kneeling practice.  i'm good.  minute of deer accuracy.

 

first up today:  Round Up - kill some annoying weeds.

The walnut is BLACK! With the maple strips, the panel is striking. Today, the Mesquite gets a coat of dark Walnut Watco. It'll be Monday before it can be all glued up. 

In the meantime, the perfect oval process has been identified. Now, to build the template for the inlay that will go in the lid panel. 

I think I've had more fun with this project than any in a long time.
