Old B&D router - 1/4" to 1/2" collet

Featured Replies

Trying to save some money ....... I THINK.  Is there a 1/2" collet and necessary accessories that will fit the B&D 11/4 hp, Type 1, CAT 7614 router(it still works great). I find no reference through parts lists, so that may be the answer. but woodworkers, like any other group of like minded folks usually find that way to adapt, improvise and overcome obstacles.

OR, is it not worth the money to try adapting this old lunker.

believe he wants to go the other way...

look to see if a muscle chuck will help you out...

Yup. Need to convert from 1/4 to 1/2".

I'' look at the muscle chuck.

Thanks, Tim

The adapter you're looking for probably doesn't exist for safety concerns.  Look for a deal on Craig's List for a router.  This is in your area.

@Tim Rockey...I noticed these are your first couple of posts so...Welcome Tim to TPW. Glad you found us and hope to see hanging around the 'ole virtual workbench sharing projects, techniques, questions and just plain bantering.:P

As Dan noted, check CL in your area for good used routers; sometimes NIB, never used...also give your local Pawn shops a visit...their asking prices versus selling prices vary widely. Don't be bashful to make offers.

BTW, there is a first time site user levy of round circular pastries aka, donuts. As self appointed and proclaimed assessment collector, mine should be first and chocolate covered chocolate. After five posts, you then move to the end of the collection line and will receive your apportionment.:D

Thanks for the helpful advise. No problem with the donuts either. I shipped off 2 dozen mixed yesterday. Let me know when you get them

Cheers,

Tim

Sure, You betcha. Hope you like roadkill

Back to the router..... all the 1/4" routers I've seen had a spindle far too small to fit a 1/2" bit shank. 1/2" routers have a more substantial spindle, and a simple insert can be used to reduce the size of bit it will accept. So you can reduce the bit size, but you can't increase it.

John

Or if you do increase it take extremely light cuts because the larger mass of the 1/2" bit and the side loading by the operator can overcome the ability of the chuck quite easily.

I do not want to see or hear a cutter flying out of a router at 30,000 rpm.

the routers bearings/bushings will have a tough time w/ the increased mass and it may implode...

Out of curiosity, what is the model number of the B&D router ?
