My kids fair projects 2017

Two of my daughters (ages 9 and 14) wanted to join 4H this year.  They both chose woodworking 1 as a category and picked some first projects that I really enjoyed helping them with.  The 9 y.o. decided on a woodworkers mallet and the 14 y.o. wanted to build an Aggrevation board.  They both spent a fair amount of time in the shop with me learning how to use the tools and making their projects.  The mallet was pretty much all unplugged work, including drilling the lace hole with a post drill.  She surprised the judges when she told them that!  The aggrevation board has a hinged storage box that is box jointed.  It is made from a recycled Walnut table top.  Both projects took blue ribbons at the 4H fair and received invites to the state 4H   Fair where the game board also earned a a Superior.  The mallet earned a trophy at the 4H fair as well!  These were first projects for both girls and I am proud of both of them for their efforts.  They are talking about next year's projects already!

Not so much woodworking, but the 9 y.o. Also made a "trash to treasure" wind chime from old kitchen tools.  She used the same hand crank drill press and I helped her to drill all of the holes.  She earned a blue with it also.  They had a great first year in 4H!!!

Congratulations!   I love the 4-H woodworking program.  My eldest (now 41) started when she was 8 and her two younger sisters followed.   I've been involved with it as an advisor, judge, and program developer ever since.  None of them does woodworking now, but it instilled in them a sense of self-accomplishment, patience, and delayed gratification,  I think.

Congratulations to your daughters...

pretty impressive what they accomplished...

Congrats! I am happy they had fun and got the woodworking bug! I was in 4H myself from age 9 to 18 - fun, fun years

Congratulations to those girls and, to a first class dad, as well.

Congrats to both girls for their achievements and recognition and kudos to you for supporting them in this endeavor. Great projects by both!

Our daughter was a 10 year 4-H'er and now 3 of 4 grandchildren are too (4th one is only 3). All have done woodworking at some juncture.

They'll never forget these years and the time they spent with dad in the shop.:)

Congratulations to the girls for a job well done. Also want to congratulate Dad for his support.

Congrats to all involved.  Making memories and having fun doing it.  Doesn't get any better than that.  Brent, they are acquiring some real world skills thanks to you and the social skills come with it.  Nice! Nice! Nice!.

Congratulations to you and the girls!  All three are great projects and worthy of the ribbons.  How cool that they both elected to try woodworking out for their projects.

On an unrelated note, what/who is Bureau Co. IL named after?

I am a transplant to the area so had to do a little Googling.  wikapedia is telling me that Bureau (or something similar to it) is the surname for a couple of french brothers that once ran a trading post in the area.  The county is named after them.

Thanks for the kind words...

Congratulations to all three of you! Well done.

A pat on the back for all of you.  I'm not sure they will keep it up, but it's a great introduction to materials and tools and i hope they had fun doing the projects:).

Hats off to the girls and you, they sure look proud in the pictures and have a right to be. They are going to grow up to be fine young ladies with great memories.
