I HAVE ONE VERY SIMILAR TO THAT ONE. I DON'T USE IT, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO ASK FOR IT. Any ideas on price? It has a pair of new, never used blades with it.

is it a Lion Trimmer or another brand...

OK, I'll go to $2 and I'll still kick in the shipping :D

Be careful what you agree to, lew, the cost of the shipping might very well surprise you.

$40-50 worth (NJ to FL). If the price hadn't been so reasonable I would have thought twice about getting this one. Even with the shipping the price was on par with what I was finding locally and this one was 90%+ already, and far better then what I was seeing here.

As a rule of thumb...plan on USPS shipping being about $2/lb. This baby is around 25-30#

Are Lion miter trimmers still being manufactured? If so where and do you have any contact information?

They went out of business quite some time ago (back in the 70s I believe), and a close competitor and equally good version made by Dosch also went under. The new ones you see anymore are generally Asian import copies. You can find used ones, just be careful. hipping (as mentioned above can be really costly, plus some folks think they are made of gold.

Many thanks for your response.

I did find a Lion for less than $100. I also found a company that makes replacement blades. I'm still looking for a reputable blade sharpening service.

Happy Holidays,

Dave

$100 is a very good price for a Lion. As for sharpening, those blades can be done with a Scary Sharp (sandpaper and glass) method, but if they have been neglected it may take some work. If you have, or know anyone who does have, a slow speed wet grinder (Tormek or a clone) they can be sharpened fairly easily on them. There are sharpening services that do them, but dang if I can think of any at the moment.

I have the Tormek and I found it amusing that the factory box included Band Aids. However, it was no joke. After sharpening a few wood chisels, I had to quit for a few days. There was way too much blood. Latter this week, I'll take delivery on the Lion trimmer.  I'm not sure if the Lion blades will fit into the Tormek holder but, I'll give it a go.

Many Thanks for all your assistance.

Dave

I got to sharpen a couple of chisels on a Tormak a few years back at a demo. A fantastic sharpening tool, but it's a bit pricy for my hobby shop. I do have a WorkSharp  that works well for my purposes.

Me, too, and I love mine! Bought it years ago- the original "green" one. There should be a jig/holder that will fit the knives on the trimmer.

Same, very versatile tool.

Tormek suggests using the planer knife holder (as I recall) which is one of the more expensive jigs. But I'm thinking one of the others will work as well...or possibly something shop made..

The Tormek SVH-320 (planer, jointer, miter/ chopper blade holder) is very pricey at Amazon's $200. But, sending these blades into the machine shop, I can spend that much in a year. It seems there's always a week in turn around time before I can get back to work. Hey, it's Christmas time !!!!!

I did some online looking for some wood chips for a smoker.   Most places either didn't carry them or were out of stock locally.  I did find the local Menards had 42 bags of them.   $1.99 sale price after $1 off.  Just for the heck of it I looked up "delivery options."    They'd deliver to me for a mere $109.00.     It's all of 20 miles away all but the first and last mile on one expressway.   Luckily, I found a 3' piece of hickory in my lumber inventory.   Saved $111.

For wood smokers, chips and grilling, pls look at https://www.sausagemaker.com. It's a Buffalo,NY manufacturing company and there is no "junk" in the store. It's virtually all stainless steel, far exceeding anything you might find in Cabela's for a "little" more money.

I'm not sure what it is with the shipping costs anymore, but they are almost prohibitive for we mere mortals. I sent 10# 125 miles (USPS) and it was $24........UPS wanted $41. It's almost like the big shippers got all the discounts so the rest of us are paying more.

what are the 2 extensions on each side with the bolt through them. I have a pootatuck lion trimmer where the knife on one side is not 90 degrees to the base.  Is there an adjustment     Thanks Tim

I've always assumed those were blade guards, keeping the edge from hitting other junk on the bench post-cut.  I don't think there is any adjustment, but if that big bolt is bent or something, that would explain what you are seeing.  Someone having dropped the thing would account for it.
