A while back, my son "picked" one of these...

It is wood, highly shaped..

It came in two parts.   He took the insides out of his old controller,  and just installed them in this wood case.    Even had a couple wood buttons....only one is left, now. 

 

I don't carve.....those here that do....get busy.

The kids really like to "personalize" these controllers. I was subbing recently and they boys were changing the color of the LEDs in one of theirs.

I'd say there is a fair amount of work in making that. Pretty cool!

Maybe get a plastic controller, and use the the case to program the CNC?
