May 18, 20179 yr I need some advice. I have some rough sawn cherry in the shop. I have a request from the better half to construct a housing for the hampers. Basically a case with feet and two doors that open then a drawer with full extension slides. The bedroom is a traditional cherry veneer over partical board. What do I need to consider if I make the case out of edge joined solid Cherry? The expansion will be across the depth of the cabinet. How would you keep it from breaking the face frame apart? The back will be rabbeted for a 1/8" plywood which will flex. All my previous furniture was made from plywood with oak veneer or maple or cherry or walnut. I am very concerned that the case sides bottom and top may destroy itself if not designed properly. Should I keep the cherry for the face frame and go buy 3/4" ply with cherry veneer for the box? See the latest wood magazine's traditional ice box design then modify for size and cherry with two plan doors. Edited December 5, 20178 yr by Ron Dudelston tags added
May 19, 20179 yr I think solid wood shouldn't be a problem. Side grain will run vertical meaning the primary expansion will be front to back. A separate face frame shouldn't restrict that movement. I'd fasten the face frame with a dado and tongue joint. A solid top with grain running left/right will expand in the same direction as the sides. I'd use wooden clips and an inside perimeter dado for the top to allow for any movement. You didn't say how you were making the doors. The plan you referenced has stick and cope overlay.
May 19, 20179 yr Author Thanks, would the face frame be glued into the dado and tongue joint? "I'd use wooden clips and an inside perimeter dado for the top to allow for any movement." The inside perimeter dado is understood. The wooden clips are not can you please explain further? The doors are cope and stick with a floating 1/4" T cherry flat panel. Inside the bin are laid on top a shallow full extension tray so that you open the doors fully and slide out the bin then remove the bin then empty the clothes then replace the bin. most hampers has good ventilation so I am considering having the back only come up 3/4 of the way.

I would glue the sides to the face frame as the grain orientation is in the same direction. Here's a little drawing of the tongue and dado- not to scale! Again, these are just my ideas, hopefully others will give you some input.
