Popular Post kmealy Posted May 13, 2017 Popular Post Report Posted May 13, 2017 We had an interesting discussion about tools (and spending) at the woodworking club this morning. One guy said his son said he didn't need the money so he'd just spent $300+ on a shooting plane. Another said people would visit his shop and be in awe at what he spent. I recalled the old line, "When I die, I hope my wife does not sell my tools for what I told her I paid for them." The several guys said they paid for their recent equipment with the money they saved on one cabinet build. I always says, "It's cheaper than golf and you get furniture to show for it." A couple of guys that worked for me always took off in the spring for a week in the south playing three rounds of golf every day. Let's see, travel, hotels, meals out, greens fees, replacement balls, special shoes and clothing, drinks at the bar afterwards, and generally a new club or two each year. Yep, there's a nice table saw right there. Their memories last a while, my table saw is going strong after 30 years. And I have many items in my house and my three children's houses that I've made. I don't berate them for their enjoyment and hoped they didn't do the same for me. Fred W. Hargis Jr, HARO50, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote

Gene Howe Posted May 15, 2017 Report Posted May 15, 2017 Never took up golf. Don't know one end of the ball from the other. But, did spend some time at the "19th hole". Nowhere near a golf course, though. HARO50, Dadio and Cal 3 Quote

CharlieL Posted May 19, 2017 Report Posted May 19, 2017 (edited) I've had to spend my money wisely. After about 30 years of woodworking no cabinet saw here, and probably never will be. I like the Delta 34-441 contractors table saw with 30" Unifence and mobile base that I have. Since I bought it new about 25 years ago I've replaced the small toggle switch infront of the cabinet with a paddle switch under the fence rail where it's easier to access. It is wired for 230V, no more triping the breaker. Added a Delta removable out feed table, and gave the saw efficient and user friendly dust collection. For a dust collector I have a Delta 50-760 and added a onboard second stage separator to it. For a router table I liked the look of the Kreg portable, so I built one and added a Woodpeckers aluminum plate and ring set, with a Freud fence. At one time I had a old Oliver 159 lathe, but I got rid of it because I never used it. Edited May 19, 2017 by CharlieL HARO50, Grandpadave52, kmealy and 1 other 4 Quote
