oldwoodie Posted April 16, 2017 Report Posted April 16, 2017 (edited) Water appears every two-three days in the middle of the kitchen floor. This is what I know: It does have a low place where the water stands, it is not animals causing it, it is not the refrig, dishwasher or lines, washing machine, supply lines going to them, roof was inspected by roofer, no stains on walls or ceiling, no water running across the surface.. The kitchen sink or cabinets seem wet. I was told that the sink drain pipe was loose some time ago, but it was tightened up. I bought a new washing machine and dishwasher because of a big sale on them, so I have definitely discounted them. My question is: How can I find out the source of the leak. I am planning to replace the flooring, but I can't until the water leak is repaired. Someone suggested I sprinkle flour on the floor, but she has three dogs and a cat would track it, so that is out. Another said to put newspaper down to find the leak. Are there other suggestions other than visual? Unless you have suggestions that will detect the leak's source, I imagine I will start replacing the drain pipes under the sink. Once the leak is eliminated, I will replace the floor covering. Any suggestions on what to get for the flooring? Thanks for helping! Edited November 20, 2017 by Ron Dudelston tags added Quote
Stick486 Posted April 16, 2017 Report Posted April 16, 2017 what's the floor construction and is there any water lines under the floor... how big does the puddle get.. Chips N Dust 1 Quote
lew Posted April 16, 2017 Report Posted April 16, 2017 You would think if it was a leak, you would see the water everyday. Maybe the hand sprayer at the sink has a leak. Every now and then our refrigerator icemaker will drop a random icecube. They melt on the floor. Also, the refrigerator freezer (side by side) defrost drain will pop loose and water/ice builds up in the bottom of the freezer. It gets to a point that the water runs out on the floor during the middle of the night when the defrost cycle runs. Took me a while to find this problem. Did you check the back of the frig where the plastic water line runs up to the ice maker. It could have a crack/hole. steamshovel, HARO50 and Chips N Dust 3 Quote
oldwoodie Posted April 16, 2017 Author Report Posted April 16, 2017 Construction is plywood I think. No ice maker, pipes under house are almost three feet below the floor, when I moved this house in, I had it raised up so I could get my old bones under there! If paper don't show up lead, I will just start replacing all lines. It is going to be stopped this week! I promise! I got a lot better things to do than this! Maybe doughnuts can be enjoyed then. It is a house used for a women's ministry headquarters, so I need to get it corrected asap. Thanks! Quote
Chips N Dust Posted April 16, 2017 Report Posted April 16, 2017 What kind of flooring? Maybe if you pull it up, that might show the direction the water is coming from Quote
Al B Posted April 16, 2017 Report Posted April 16, 2017 If the problem didn't exist before you got the new dishwasher, I'd definitely check the drain hookup. The water flow thru the drain is under pressure when the dishwasher is emptying and may be filling the line enough to expose a leak that might not otherwise be noticeable. Quote
lew Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 Could be a defective dishwasher air vent in the drain line. Quote
Roly Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 If the dishwasher empties into a garbage disposer was the plug in the disposer knocked out ? Seen that more than once. Roly Grandpadave52 1 Quote
John Morris Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 Exact same thing happened to us, new dishwasher, sprung a leak a year later, see "Water Intake" valve, it's always under pressure, that's the bugger that caused our entire kitchen and down stairs flooring to get replaced, we were on a week long vacation, came home to wet toe kicks and baseboards, and water puddled on the kitchen floor, that lil bugger failed. "Water Intake Valve" at the 90 degree joint. It was going on for a long time before it showed, by the time it did show, there was a ton of damage at the wall and framing. It just slowly soaked up the water like a sponge, after the walls behind the cabinets were saturated, the water had to find another outlet, out from under the cabinets to the kitchen floor. We had it all, mold, the whole nine yards. HARO50 1 Quote
oldwoodie Posted April 17, 2017 Author Report Posted April 17, 2017 (edited) I replaced the dishwasher in hopes that the old one was leaking, but not the new one. Everything is dry under the new dishwasher, new washing machine, refrig., and freezer too. Edited April 17, 2017 by oldwoodie left out words John Morris 1 Quote

Stick486 Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 (edited) so now you need to determine if the water is dripping/flowing/seeping to where it is... raid your vacuum for some ultra fine dust and put it on the floor.. traveling water will cut a swath through the dust... set a chair over the puddle for dripping water... the chair seat will get wet... seeping/welling up will just be there... that means it is traveling between flooring layers.. oozing from a seam??? is this home a mobile??? John Morris Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 Crawling under the home, mobile and take a look as well? Perhaps you can see some water staining on the sub-flooring from beneath, could see ground zero where it's coming from? Quote
HandyDan Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 My brother just had a semi-clogged main drain. His force flush toilet on the first floor was blowing water out of the basement toilet bowl when flushed if the conditions were right. Toilet blowing water out of sink trap??? Quote
oldwoodie Posted April 17, 2017 Author Report Posted April 17, 2017 No signs of lead under house (Not mobile home), no stains from ceiling leaks, no moisture around walls, machines, etc. I am going to ask that no one uses the kitchen sink, and in meantime, I am going prospecting under and around sink. Thanks John Morris 1 Quote
