Upstairs remodel, Part I

The contractor finished up his part this week.  Took them right at 11 1/2 work days, just the man and his son.  I helped with some of the bull & gopher  work and made sure lunch got here and did all the clean up each day.  The initial plan was for them to tear off the dormers, make them larger and hang the drywall inside.  I did a "change order" and included having them finish the drywall and I am glad I did.  I did study their drywall techniques and hope I can replicate some of that as the project goes into later phases.

I took two pickup loads of debris to the landfill, just over a ton total.

While this was going on I wasn't too active on this, or any other site.  I was a tired puppy at the end of each day!

Herewith, a couple before and after pics...

Before, the dormers were 3' x 3' ID.  The bottoms of the windows were right at eye level:

After...

The dormers are 6' x 7' ID.  Larger windows are now 40" off the floor:

Keith, we have lived here 29 years.  No plans to sell.  Just doing some remodeling that we always wanted to do.

Cal

Really nice effect. Good call on letting them do the drywall finishing.

What a difference the amount of light that is let in. Good call on deciding to do the remodel, you have gained twice the space and twice the daylight, and a bigger window to see out of,,,,,,,and clean. I love that old house Cal, and with such a nice front porch too, reminds me of the old farm house I was raised in. Now the trim work starts., the fun part.

That does look nice! I agree - great call on letting them finish the drywall.

Bet that swing gets some use on summer evenings!

Really beautiful home!

Hey, glad to see the work going on. The outside is a world of difference in looks.

I give you credit trusting someone else to do the work. Most of the work around here its hard to get them to understand your feelings for the language is different and I never learned any Spanish, too bad.

I hope you don't have them sleeping in the car waiting.

Some of the guys around me built a large one room cabin on the other side of their property for kin and guest. Keeps the visitors out from under their feet was the reasoning for the separate build.

Glad you found a camera. We all thank you for that.

Looks better.  What's the plan for the extra space?

Thank you all.  Will post up pics as I go along.

Dan, no specific plans for the extra space, Lew - the swings do get a good workout year round!

What about the floor?

Late to "pay my respects" Cal. It's amazing how much the character of the outside changed with just a few feet addition. Looks like a great location for a recliner or indoor hammock to me:P

Beautiful property all around and very befitting for a small southern community. The porch says it all...Sweet tea, fried chicken, fried green tomatoes and pecan pie...doesn't get any better than that.

Mike, ripped out 30 year old carpet - it wasn't shag but it sure was dated!!!

Will go back with laminate.

Dave, my favorite season on the porch is spring - when the pittisporum and sweet shrub are in bloom; summer when the gardenia is in bloom; fall when tea olives and russian olive are blooming; and winter when we have a warm sunny day.
