Clean up time

A bit of downtime today in the shop.    Got to looking at those saws hanging up in the tills.....dusty, and spots of red growing?    Time to take them down and clean them up.     Dug through the piles,  wiped down three Disston D-23s.....a Corsair 8ppi crosscut, But left the Disston Challenger rip saw alone for now..... Cleaned and added a finish to a few handles to brighten them up a bit....( rattle can Lacquer )

Soo, here is the results...

Late 40s Disston D-8 with etch.  8 ppi crosscut, next..

Also, late 40s, I think this is a D-7?   Might be a tad older, and maybe it is a No. 7, pre-1928?  10ppi crosscut, next?

However, THIS one IS an oldie,  a No.7 , 7ppi, with nib.  The first two saws are standing up behind this on.  And finally, a "mystery saw"

I had "picked" this one up at an estate sale last year.   Cleaned up nicely.    Ron Dud MIGHT know the place where it was made..

This is an Atkins saw, from Indy, IN.   Unable to read the etch, other than a few banner like things....

Handle is well worn, too.   That is a "7" stamped in the plate..

So, it is a 7ppi.   Teeth look like they are filed for a crosscut....

I also dusted off the 358's saw handle, and gave it a touch-up finish.   There is another D-8 in the old tool chest I need to get  to....and a third D-8 sitting upstairs.    I intend to take it over to get it's 8ppi teeth done, aling with a No.4 backsaw.   Once back here, I  clean those handles, and hang them up in the tills.   the "rattle-can" stuff even smell worse than the BLO stuff....

"Saw" what you did today:rolleyes:...Sweet...

Have since found out that the Atkins saw is a No. 51 model.....about 1930s, maybe older.    Makes all those saws older than me......sheesh

The sharpening guy called this morning, the two Mitre Box saws are done!   :)  made the Road Trip over to pick them up. the bill was ...$30.17 counting sales tax.   He also used black electrical tape to protect the SHARP teeth on the two saws......test drove each a little bit ago......:D YES!   Nice when a saw is indeed sharp!    I also dropped off two other saws for the guy to work on....my No. 4 backsaw I use for dovetails and finger joints, and a Disston D-8, 8ppi crosscut saw....we'll see how those two saws do...

Anything from a 7ppi up to a 5ppi, I can do myself.....when them fine teeth show up....I can't see them well enough to file them.   That D-8 that has 10ppi will be the next saw to go.

Also on that Road Trip this morning..I dropped off one of the finger jointed boxes at a craft store, run by a friend of mine...and let her figure out what to do with it.  Told her to let me know....

Maybe it'll fetch a nice price. Might even be some left over for you  after they take their commission!

I used to carry a 7 point saw sharpened to crosscut. It was the demo saw for opening up sheet rock walls and cutting out drywall and studs for window and door remodels. It didn't gum up from the sawdust mixed with drywall dust. Also had one for ripping ,but didn't use that one much.

The 7ppi saws I can do, but they are about as fine as I can do, teeth wise.    I do have a couple 6ppi and one at 5-1/2ppi for some larger rip saw work.

Saws that came back today..

The 4' x 24"  "Small" size saw.  and.

the 5" x 28" large saw.     This is the"other" of the two big mitre saws.  and is the older of the two saws...pre-1928

Both were made by Disston, the smaller saw was after HK Porter bought out Disston.   About the same time that Stanley #2246 Mitre Box was made.

Steven do you know if there is any logic to the number of ppi to sharpen a saw? is it related to the angle on a 3 sided file?

The reason O wonder is why 5 1/2ppi ? why not 4,5,or 6?  8,10,12 seem OK. and the fine tooth saws seem OK.

Only "logic" was what the saw-maker was making that day....and felt like filing.

Maybe he screwed up and to cover his butt came up with a 5 1/2 ppi

Ok, trip to Harbor Freight today.    Son needed a couple items, and I needed those 24 pack of AAA batteries.    To get the FREE batteries, we needed a non-sale item ( not really, the clerk used the coupons anyway)  so a stick of Green Polishing compound was added in.

Got home, got the strop out, and that green stick..stropped about..8-9 chisels.

Got out the saw vise, and set it up.  I had bought a new file to do saws with...but, the file in the holder still looked good.    Both came from Menards...Stanley 6" extra slim taper files.

Got out a Disston No.7, 6ppi rip saw.   Decided to sharpen the rip teeth back up.   Three strokes per tooth.   Had to stop twice, not to change files, but to move the saw to the left for the next stretch of dental work.   Seems this is the second saw the file in the holder has done.  Finally got all the teeth filed.....should have stopped right there.....but..

Some Dummy decided to check on how fast the saw will rip a board.    Set up a 1 x 1 pine scrap.    After about 3-5 pull starts, the saw was off to the races......and found my left index finger, as well......"Saw-Stop" kicked in ( and I said OW!)  ran the saw a bit more, without the hand in the way.  Saw drifts to the left...since that is where the burrs were, a stone was used to de-burr the teeth.   Rubbed some more of that green stick onto a sandpaper that was on the palm sander.   Ran that around on the saw's plate, and now it is sharp, AND shiny.

Might get a few pictures later.....

The saw that was sharpened up is the second one in the pictures above.  One stroke across the index finger, made a nice mess.   Saw does cut quite fast, now.  Noticed it had a slight bow in the plate.    left the saw with it's "toe" laying on a couple pine blocks, and added an oil stone as a bit of weight.   let this sit overnight, and see if the bow leaves.   The saw itself is about 100 years old, after all.....even IF it now looks brand new.    Any etch is long gone, though.

chisels sharpened up include two OLD harbor Freight chisels.....

3/4" and a 1" chisel.....at least 25 years old.   I think I picked these as part of a 5 piece set.  Brand new, in fact.  The inch chisel has been well used over the years, used to have that ring around the top, too..

handles.JPG.06ca6a72649e49af791d25194b3db944.JPG

yep, USED to.  Can't really remember IF I bought these before or after 1990.....might have been before..these are the only two left out of the set.

Well, I was going to click the "like" button but I thought it would be in poor taste to "like" you cutting you finger. Glad the flesh sensing technology kicked in!

Had the dubious honor of joining you Steve, in the flesh cutting exercises. Stabbed my thumb with a utility knife. Just a little gash that Super Glue filled.
