March 15, 20179 yr I'm headed to an auction Saturday and there is a Powermatic 14 spindle sander up for auction. I read that there is an issue with the oscillation gearing. Anyone have one? If so, what's your take. What's it worth?

Sorry Ron, can't be of any help to you on this one...I've seen a couple on CL the past year or so but don't recall the asking price. I'm sure you've read some of the same threads I saw when I Googled this model. As you noted, most of the negative feedback was do to failure of the gears and bearings. IMHO, that's kind of worrisome but I since it's at an auction, if it appears complete, $125 or below would be worth the risk just because it's PM. Good luck...let us know how it works out.
March 17, 20179 yr Author Dave, we must think alike because that was my target number but only if I can hear it run and it has all the spindles with it.
March 17, 20179 yr Ron, why not just get a Rigid and get an oscillating belt, too? Mine's been a work horse for around 10 years.

I currently am babying a Performax but it smells like it it about ready to let the smoke out of itself. Once you let the smoke out, they refuse to work anymore.
March 17, 20179 yr Didn't know Performax made a spindle sander. The Rigid comes with anti smoke technology built in.

I see Grizzly now has an OSS/Belt sander similar to the Rigid. I haven't read any of the reviews. If money was no object I'd be tempted by one of these...Jet OSS JBOS-5
