That was the first thing I did  was inventory the wood and select which pieces went where.  Each level has a continuous board left to right.   I'm really liking this quarter-sawn red oak.  I was going to use QSWO, but the existing bed was red oak and didn't have any medullary ray figure.

 

The one layer has a bit more red in it, but I can fix that in the finishing, I think.

 

On the positive side, I got to use my new (to me) antique compass plane to break up an afternoon of sanding.
