Incredable idea (i think )

Featured Replies

So i have 2 old rifles....1914 KAR 98 MAUSER 8mm all matching 98% barrel and bluing. 1924 MLE-M-16 BERTHEIRE CARBINE 8mm i want to preserve the stocks which are serialized as well and design and build a thumb hole stock out of a nice deep like almost mahagony collered burrel wood. Interal fold down bi pod scope attachment point so i can still use iron sites and not have to drill and tap my reciver and possibly an adjustable cheek weild. Any thoughts?

Assuming you can find a burl wood that is big enough for a stock, it sounds like a great idea. My concern is whether the stock would hold up after being cut to shape and drilled etc, since burl woods usually have bark inclusions that may compromise stock integrity.

Wow Charles! Sounds like you may have attempted this before!

No actually I haven't John honestly, but I wanted to. I do however know about the stresses that gun stocks go through when the gun is fired. I also know at least some about the burls that are available these days, most of which have bark inclusions. IF you can find a piece of burl that is bark free, or the inclusions are not large, It should hold up well and I'd say give it a try. Either way, It should look awesome. :D

If you have the blank, I would send it to someone with a stock duplicator first to have it roughed out (at least the inletting) then go from there.

I, for one, would like to see that.  Sounds interesting.

I think im gonna sketch something up. Didnt know that about burl. All i know is i love how it looks lol. So what would be a quality eye grabbing wood to use if i cant find a good burl peice

Walnut crotch has always been a favorite, but I've seen some stunning stocks made out of tiger maple as well. If you start searching for figured gun blanks, be sure you're sitting down before you look at the prices.

But NO WAY can i afford that ANYTIME soon lol

Let me throw this out there, just in case it might interest you. There is a company called Richard's Microfit stocks that sell unfinished, 98% shaped stocks. You might look there and see if anything interests you.

I see exactly what im going for that needs to be moded. But doesnt look like i can get a specfic wood. And now way i can afford even the base model lol

I rather like Walnut, especially if it has a non standard grain. I've even seen curly walnut, but in small pieces.
