I wonder if it will be difficult to sharpen.

Well I've seen it done  with a cone shaped grinder bit. But one could just sharpen it from outside.

Thing is - - one only gets so many sharpenings. Then poof, it's gone.

I've considered making one of these but, with my lack of forging equipment, I doubt it would turn out satisfactorily.

Well this one is HSS. Like I dun said; it weren't cheap.   One could use  oil or water hardening  steel.  Grind  an edge on one side then heat it and bend it and then re-heat it in a fire pit and leave it in the coals to cool over night and then  heat treat it with propane and oxy and then you'd just have to  sharpen it a lot.

I bought a circuit board all ready to  load  with technology and a book  on building an EDM machine.  I gotta say it's  a bit intimidating.  The intent was to make ring tools from carbide. I dunno if I'll get 'r dun.

I was doing some searching trying to learn what are the advantages of the hook tool. Didn't find anything definitive but I did find this article on making one. Thought you might find it interesting.

Could you post a picture of the hook end?

You can peel material off at such an incredible rate you can't believe it.

You must be one for persistence. That is amazing. All the reading I do have only see a very few pros make one of these. If I wanted pone would have to buy it. Saw Hosaluk use one and he is an artist with it. He said the hook is much better for end grain.
