February 14, 20179 yr Popular Post I ordered a very inexpensive set of mortise chisels, Narex. A Czech outfit, just chopped a test mortise using the 1/4" chisel and I gotta say, not bad for a set of three for 49 bucks. I purchased a cheap set because I want to custom grind the widths of the chisel, I didn't want to buy high end and grind em down. But these Narex's are pretty decent if you want a starter set to get going with, I would recommend these. Below, 1/4" inch mortise chopped at 5/8ths deep.
February 14, 20179 yr I have a set I used when I made some mission furniture and yes they do the job very well. Cannot vouch for other brands but the edges of the shaft are very sharp also.

February 14, 20179 yr I have one Narex mortise chisel, a 1/4", and it does very well in my not-so-intensive-hand-tool shop. Definitely a good value.
February 14, 20179 yr Author One thing I forgot to mention is these chisels are beveled, which was a nice surprise when I got them out and started using them, you do not notice it at first, but when I started chopping I could tell right away. A very nice feature indeed.
