February 4, 20179 yr comment_96037 when they built castles, the stairs spiraled up clockwise (looking from above), so that a right handed defender could just reach around the corner with his sword and defend himself and his damsel from climbing attackers. these stairs, in the words of John Candy in "planes, trains, automobiles" are "GOING THE WRONG WAY!" or you don't have a damsel you are worried about.
