Well, early in the last century, Sears catalog was a way for people living in the boondocks to buy goods they could not get locally -- clothing, household goods,  farming equipment, tools, etc.   Amazon has sort of done the same thing 100 years later.   I remember when there were only a couple of stores in town where you could buy woodworking equipment.  Oddly enough, Sears was also one of the few places the average joe could buy mechanic's tools.  We used to go to the woodworking shows to see what was available and buy.stuff there.   Now, we can shop at 11 pm on Sunday in West Undershirt, ND and have it at your doorstep on Thursday, and even get reviews of comparable equipment.   Free enterprise developed a better mousetrap.

 

Home Depot is also adapting.   I've bought several obscure items that they don't stock in any store, but it's shipped-to-store free.   I don't know how they made money shipping a $3.50 can of something, putting it in a box and having a person at the store fetch it for me.  I would have been just as happy if they'd just put on their next truck delivery to the store (like Do-it-best does.)

Home Depot is also adapting.   I've bought several obscure items that they don't stock in any store, but it's shipped-to-store free.

 

I have used this service from HD also.  On two occasions, the items were shipped from Locust Grove, Ga. (about 60 from me) to Columbia, SC were it spent 2-3 days before coming back to the store near me.  Since I expect that now, I just plan for the items to take a week to get to me.

 

Amazon, on the other hand, has all but lost my business unless I am buying from a seller off Amazon.

My last 2-3 purchases from Amazon directly, even though showed to be in stock, took about a month to ship to me.  I figure it is Amazon's way of "encouraging" me to pay for Amazon Prime.  Didn't use to be like this.

You could be right, Cal. For reasons unrelated to shipping, we've been Prime members for a couple years. We're in the boonies and shipping from Amazon rarely takes more than three business days.

I like Amazon Prime too ,got my moneys worth out of it. But I too have had to wait on some shipments for a long time and have even forgotten what I ordered when it arrives. just like Christmas, ,"what did I buy this time"/ LOL.
