January 13, 20179 yr I was watching a wood turning video on You tube and clicked on a guy using a texturing tool. I have not seen a turned piece that was textured. Can someone tell me about these tools and advise on their use. Thanks
January 13, 20179 yr Ron, I've seen 2 variations of texturing tools. One is a chatter type The other is spiral type I have the spiral type and have used it to make decorative rims on some turned platters. I'm not very good at it, yet. The chatter tool creates a pattern, more or less random but repeated. Depending on the length of the cutter and speed of rotation, the pattern can be varied. The texturing tool does about the same thing but the toothed wheel creates pretty much the same pattern all the time. The chatter tool is usually used on the "end" of a turning- the top of a lid. The texture tool can be used on the side or the end. Here's an example of the texturing tool on flat grain Paint can be used to highlight the texturing. Here's a link for making a Chatter Tool- https://www.hiltonhandcraft.com/Articles/ShopMadeChatterTool.html
January 13, 20179 yr Popular Post I think tops and boxes are the turnings that are most often textured. The technique works much better on end grain than it does elsewhere. Often, the bottom of a box and/or the inside of the lid are textured. It's also normal to combine texturing with color to highlight the effect. Brendon Stemp has a good video on making and using a chatter tool. Steve
