Sears sold Craftsman

I could never figure out why Sears ever bought out K Mart when they both were in trouble at that time when they purchased it.

That isn't what happened, it was the other way around. K Mart took over Sears and then assumed the name for the combined outfit. This was all orchestrated by the moron running the K mart (Lampert). I was following the story in the financial news and I did not see one analyst that thought this made sense. Some did speculate that Lampert did that because Sears had some enormously valuable real estate holdings in there store locations.

That is my take on this too ,Fred. I read an article on the long term business plan for the combined company to get out of the retail business and to go exclusively into property management. Sears has over the years become very valuable in the property they own and the locations are prime locations to develop into retail outlets for other companies. They planned to take the property and tear down the old buildings and develop into malls and such, and lease them out.

They claim they are one of the largest real estate holders in the world. Not a word about retailing.

I was at a flee market sometime back and saw these pins. I thought they told the story of Craftsman. A time when they were a great tool to a time when they are just another tool.

1927 inaugural year.

1952 25th Anniversary

1977 50th Anniversary

2002 75th Anniversary

K-Mart left Canada a number of years back, and Target bought most of their locations. That chain lasted (here) for something like six months! Half-empty shelves, clueless employees, and (so I heard) nowhere NEAR the quality of goods carried in the U.S. As for Sears (here Simpson-Sears), the only thing I've bought there in the last ten years was a lawn tractor. Last year's model, at something like half price. I won't miss them!

Too many MBAs. Not enough Ray Krocs or JC Pennys. Or, Jeff Bezos, for that matter.

Hmm, not sure why.    Opening paragraphs pretty much say it all

"What do you say when your company is falling into an abyss? What do you say after six consecutive years of losses and many rounds of store closings? What excuse can you make when you haven’t been able to hold onto senior executives who actually know the industry?

If you’re Edward Lampert, Chairman and CEO of Sears Holdings, you blame everyone and everything but your own leadership."

Lampert had no retail experience and I guess it showed.

The gist of that story is true (or at least I believe it) but there's a long list of guys running companies that have no clue. bob Nardelli is my favorite, after almost ruining Home Depot, he got a several hundred million dollar goodbye package when he was fired (and me an HD shareholder at the time raged-smiley-emoticon.gif), but to prove that he hadn't met his level of incompetence yet, he was then appointed to run Chrysler! I also remember Carl Icahn buying TWA, and it went under shortly thereafter. All these guys desrve some kind of punishment for the lives they ruined. Enough, off of soap box.
