Home made carbide parting tools

Featured Replies

I made 2 parting tools from an old Harbor Freight saw blade. I used both on a trial piece. Seemed to work great. I made them extra wide so that bending would not be an issue. It wasn't and I may trim them some. Being wide like that causes the tool rest to be extra low and will require some practice. I wish now that I had used a quality blade. I think that the carbide they used wasn't of the best quality. I'll find out on my next project.

Great job, didn't ruin the saw blade either.

ditto....

The mother of invention...

Question is did you find the shapely handle to be too short and without enough back support for the toolrest? As to HF blades yes I have found the carbide to be substandard.

Gerald, I have a Jet mini and and my regular cutting tools are also short. Before I mounted the blades, I used a diamond file to sharpen them. Much to my surprise it quickly took the metal down. They are sharp, but the carbide must be , as you said, very substandard.
