Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworkers! November 21, 2016

Featured Replies

Good morning Patriot Woodworker's!

Great to be here today and it's a wonderful rainy day here in Southern California! Finally! While my day job is an outdoors job, on rainy days like this we have enough work in office to keep us busy. Fortunately for us woodworkers as well, rain does not stop our work, but sometimes we need to head out doors and grab some supplies in the down pours, so with that we'll leave ya'll with some safety tips for rainy days.

But not before we ask the ever burning question, what did you all do over the weekend, and what have you all planned for the week ahead! Please submit your images and stories here, we love to know what everyone is up too in their shops, and in their lives in general.

Avoid Cruise Control

Most modern cars feature cruise control. This feature works great in dry conditions, but when used in wet conditions, the chance of losing control of the vehicle can increase. To prevent loss of traction, the driver may need to reduce the car’s speed by lifting off the accelerator, which cannot be accomplished when cruise control is engaged.

When driving in wet-weather conditions, it is important to concentrate fully on every aspect of driving. Avoiding cruise control will allow the driver more options to choose from when responding to a potential loss-of-traction situation, thus maximizing your safety.

Slow Down and Leave Room

Slowing down during wet weather driving can be critical to reducing a car’s chance of hydroplaning, when the tires rise up on a film of water. With as little as 1/12 inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water per second to keep the rubber meeting the road. Drivers should reduce their speed to correspond to the amount of water on the roadway. At speeds as low as 35 mph, new tires can still lose some contact with the roadway.

To reduce chances of hydroplaning, drivers should slow down, avoid hard braking or turning sharply and drive in the tracks of the vehicle ahead of you. Also, it’s important for motorists to allow ample stopping distance between cars by increasing the following distance of the vehicle in front of them and beginning to slow down to stop for intersections, turns and other traffic early.

Not much happened in the shop this weekend. Watched my grandson in a basketball tournament. Changes out a couple of door knobs and light switches in the house that were going bad.

That is pretty much made the weekend. Got a busy week this week since it will be short and family is coming in for the holiday.

Bandsaw blade broke yesterday. Sounded like a someone fired a 44 next to me. I ducked. Last 3/8" one I had. No 1/4" either. Note to self: order spares. Won't stop production, though. Plenty to do.

Our car has automatic traction control. Don't see how it could work on a front wheel drive. So, I don't trust it. Cruise control is off at the first hint of wet road.

Quote John HAR050(I have room in my basement if you can get them here! ;))  You're out of luck.  I found three wire rack shelves at the Habitat Restore four feet long for $1.50 each.

Hung them up next to the center support beam for the house.  Storage problem solved.

No project work this weekend...getting snowblowers ready for the winter...clean, oil, gas, carburetor, etc...

As for cruise control...ABSOLUTELY...no cruise control on wet roads.  Cruise control senses the car's speed...then the car hits some extra water on the roadway...car slows down, cruise control takes over and gives more throttle.  Same thing on a sweeping curve, hill, etc...car slows down, more throttle.  We all know that is NOT what we want so good reminder to leave cruise control at the house when it rains...especially in New England/mid-Atlantic when the leaves are on the ground...(I guess anywhere, for that matter :) what was I thinking...the only place with falling leaves ?...cheez)

Ok...back to work...think I'll change my username to "need-a-nap"...

Worked on that Cherry Box project for a bit.....down to doing "details" work.

ALL of that white stuff outside has melted away...might be the best part of today.

"Work hard, Nap harder"   seems to be about the right way.....

catastrophic power failure last night...

today is figuring out why...

Cool shelving idea, Dan!

Stick, to quote Ralphie's Dad- "Nobody Move, a fuse is out!"

Last scoop is on the lathe awaiting sanding. Then they all need to be cut and finished.

Just as well, I guess Dan. I would have had to make more room between the joists. Good buy on the wire racks!

BTW... Worked all day Saturday (big Christmas open house), and since Sunday is the only day LOML isn't working, we usually take a leisurely drive along the back roads to my favourite burger joint. (Only an hour each way!) The Burger of the Week is always top-notch!

With all due respect, I need to bring the California drivers to Indiana for some real time slick road driving experience.  You haven't lived until you've driven on ice.  Rain is a twice a week experience here.

Took the LOML to the doctor's today for a minor medical procedure, about a half-hour drive from home. It's been snowing most of the night, and all day, temperatures just under freezing so some of the roads were icy. Strong wind to make it worse. Amazed at the idiots who tailgate, stepping on the gas to catch up then hitting the brakes. It's not like they get there any faster!

Over here in Ohio...we would also throw in a few Whitetailed Deer  running across the road.....right in front of the drivers....just for an added thrill...

My plate has been full lately. Had a Woodturners club meeting Saturday. The club TV died and the good news is the school projector worked. On security at church Sunday. Worked Monday and that is a "fun" day in a drugstore or any retail for that matter.  Ok now today went to the range to zero in new JR 9mm Carbine. Shot 5 groups of 3 and the last all went in the same hole.....dead center. Ok will post pic tomorrow. Felt so good after getting home I cut the hedge in front ....getting ready to put up Christmas lights. Our whole neighborhood puts on a light show for Christmas and we even decorate the front subdivision drive.

Maybe I can slow down tomorrow.

@John Morris we have not had 3/4 inch of rain in over 4 months so no problem with wet roads here.

We've been pretty dry too Gerald, but we are getting a tad these days, thanks goodness, one cigarette gets tossed out of a car window into the grass on the side of the hwy and we go up in flames! But lately we've gotten some moisture.

I am not familiar with your 9mm, are you using iron sights or scope? Nice job zeroing!

THANK-YOU John for the encouragement and support and to all my extended "family" here at TPW. I've just updated the thread and while many positive things have occurred, some additional challenges came our way even in the past couple of hours. God bless you all and I hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving. I truly can say ours has been more blessed and valued than ever before.

still pulling for you and yours Dave...
