Tool help

Featured Replies

Hi im justin "jay" and im a disabled OIF veteran. I love working with my hands (aviation and automotive mechanic) before i had to stop working. In a tight pinch trying to live of VA disability while fighting the DOD and SS. Trying to find out if anyone knows where i may be able to apply for gifted woodworking tools or businesses that will allow use of thier facilities in the Tampa bay fl area. Thank you and god bless

Thanks for dropping in Jay! And thank you for your service!

I am out in the field right now, when I get in tonight I'll be at my desktop PC, I'll do a little research. Thanks sir!

Meanwhile please drop me an email at johnmorris@thepatriotwoodworker.com

and if you will, in the email I'd like to read more about the type of disability, cause, how, branch of service, and any other information you would like to disclose. I look forward to hearing from you Jay!

Well ty for your support and it was my honor and pleasure. Ill send info to you as well as a link to a video i just did about a retreat i went on recently that they asked me to be a spokesperson for

Welcome, Jay. I would also like to say "thanks" for your service. No doubt John will have some info, but let me ask...what tools do you have (or are trying to acquire)?

Mr Hargis,

Thank you for your support and it was my pleasure and honor. I have nada as far as wood working tools. Im looking for just basic tools like a few different kinds of saws (cirular, jig, etc) chisle set clamps etc. Just enough to get started. My wife is starting a business to provide hand made blankets and what not to wounded vets free of charge called Patriot Stitching CO. and i would like to contribute by making personalized items as well to begin with. Eventually when we have our own home and can afford it i would love to have a full wood working shop but thats far down the road as i said above living on VA disability with a family of 5 just doesnt work and fighting the DOD and Social Security is REDICULOUS as im unemployable and require a full time caregiver.

Jay...you're doing a phenomenal thing...bless you for it...

It doesn't sound like you could manage a lot of general woodworking tools so I'm going to offer a different school of thought...

Have you considered a scroll saw...scrolling can yield lots of fine projects, all of which would be easy to handle and quick to make. (see youtube for some ideas)

A scroll saw could be your only large investment besides the wood you might want to create craft goodies.  And that investment could be smaller than you think if you buy used or "less expensive brand".  Like everything else you could spend hundreds and be able to do the same things for under a hundred...

Just a thought...scrolling could focus you on many craft items and at the same time not push you into full bore "woodworking"...or at least for now...

Another is "carving"...just a good knife and some small pieces of wood...there was a recent thread related to carving...you could look that up also on youtube or this site's search engine...

Regards,

Nick

Nick,

Thank you! I can still use tools quite well actually i just cant hold a job anymore due to the VA. The reason im fighting DOD and SS. Yes I have physical limitations but mostly as far as physical goes i cant lift heavy objects due to how my back is injured. 1 wrong move and ill end up either a para or quadriplegic as i have injuries in my lower back and neck but VAwont do surgery because im still walking and theres a big risk i could end up in a chair. But yes ican deffinately use a coping saw. I also am saying the power tools as i am wanting to also make things for the yard and what not for them as well. I have a ton of ideas just no way to make them lol. Also things like shelves and frames etc. Planning on using mostly reclaimed wood. Almost as a representation that we are worn scared etc but we are still beautiful and have incredable history behind it. Somethings will be made out of new wood though. Such as pocket crosses bible markers etc.

Welcome to the forum Jay!!

Apologies Jay...really late to your welcoming party. Glad you found us and even better you joined us. Thank-you for your service and sacrifices to our great nation. Please know we're pulling for you and your family.

Not sure if you have considered purchasing used tools or even if that's within your current budget, but you might check some of your local Thrift, Salvation Army & Goodwill stores along with Habitat for Humanity Restores. I've found good quality tools in all of these stores very reasonably priced. Other options are Garage & Yard sales and occasionally even flea markets. I've been able to obtain a number of quality tools for a fraction of new cost. With patience I've even made some good purchases from Craigslist too. Anyways just some options to consider. Good luck and keep us updated.

Grandpadave,

No worries and ty very much. I have considered and looked but unfortunately i cant afford to purchase. I am currently supporting a family of 5 on VA disability while fighting the DOD for my medical returement that i was supposed to have as well as SSDI. Thats deffinately and option in the future if the good Lord blesses us and pulls the governments head out of thier 4th point of contact. I find it absolutely deplorable thata combat wounded veteran can barely afford to thier family afloat while illegal immigrats are collecting thousands of dollars a month from the government, health care etc... but enough about that sorry i tend to go on random tangents with my TBI. Wife hates it but i love watching her squirm lol maybe one reason shes encouraging me. I think she may want me out of the house more considering i dont ever leave not being allowed to drive or anything lmao
