November 9, 20169 yr Popular Post Ok, kind of a "part 2" to that long thread. Camera still has issues, but I think Santa might get one for me...someday. Dovetails? Well, we did a few today Once I got the pins done, I could use them to lay out the tails Pencil to make the marks, then bandsaw to saw on the waste side. Quicker and I can see what side of a line I'm on. Test fitting as I went. BTW, waste was usually just chopped out with a chisel. Will fine tune all four corners..Tomorrow. Checked things with a square, too, Doesn't take all that long to do these things, either....finally got all four done.. I'd got this far earlier today, when the camera went dead. Came back down after the camera had charged back up. Time to clear the deck....set the frame over on the lid panel.... Both will need a bit more work. Rigged up a jig.. That big old "B" tells me that is the bottom of the side. I went through and labeled all four this way, while they were assembled. Joint numbers were marked at the top, too. Why the jig? Well, I had a Stanley #45 to use. It was still set up from the last job. Long rods, cam rest, wider cutter..all went back into the case. Short rods, and a 1/4" cutter was installed.. They are a PITA to set up, but once they are, they work very nicely..IF you don't set it too deep. Candle wax was rubbed onto the skates and the fence,,,and away we go.. Could have not used the second skate, but it balances better with it. I start at the far end and work backwards until the depth stop rides the full length. And this is what usually happens Screw is there to lock things into the jig. I wasn't always going with the grain on this.. But I can make curlies. I checked to make sure this grooves lined up as I went around the box.. Not too bad. Better than what I used to get with the router table.. So, all four sides are grooved and things match up, bench is still cleared off... And...this is as clean as it gets. Maybe tomorrow, I can fine tune the dovetails? Need to go and buy a 1/4" plywood bottom piece. All out of the thin stuff. Once I get the sides tuned up, I can cut the bottom panel to size, and maybe do a glue up? Right now, just a bit tuckered out...
November 9, 20169 yr Cool beans...I'm amazed at what you can do with that 45. Do you have the full compliment of cutters for it. Love seeing the projects you use that on. I'll stay tuned.
November 9, 20169 yr Be my luck I'd forget to drive that "dog screw" in far enough and take a hunk out of the plane iron. Nice dovetails!
November 9, 20169 yr Author Have the full "basic" set of cutters......about 24 of them, counting the slitter. Have both "match' cutters, and the sash cutter. This is most of them....have since added a few others.

Sweet...I've seen a few of the planes here & there, but most are pretty rusty, maybe one or two cutters...usually with none of the fence parts and always with a hefty price. You've got a nice set and very nice plane.
November 9, 20169 yr Another Newman piece taking shape. Really enjoy the process. I'll also stay tuned.
November 9, 20169 yr Author Went to Lowes this morning, to pick up a small sheet of plywood.....5mm Luann will work for the bottom panel. $3.67, and then I used my Mil. Discount (10% off) so that wasn't too bad, for a 2' x 2' square. Then the back of the knee "popped" a few times.....almost couldn't walk out of the place. Means shop will be closed for the day. Something popped in the back of the knee, knee cap wasn't the problem. Sitting here rest it up, and see how it goes. Fine tuning the dovetails is a matter of closing up the gaps. IF I do get back down there, I can make a small "file" out of a scrap of wood, and some 100 grit sandpaper wrapped around it, I think IF I can get down the steps, I can just sit on the shop stool and work that way........first I have to get down there...
November 9, 20169 yr I gave up on using my 45, but reading your post I will have to try again. I have a box of hollows and a box with straights varying sizes and some moulding cutters . I think one box was missing a cutter. Love these pip's you do.-

Man Steven hate to hear this for you...Might want to get a second opinion of that MRI...sounds like torn cartilage "popping" in/out of place...BTDT...hurts like H3!!...one of my wife's knees got so bad and that happened, had to go get her at work to take her to the hospital...couldn't maneuver steps for couple weeks let alone stairs...local orthopedic surgeon kept treating her back via epidurals saying that was where the issue was...took her to regional sports medicine ortho clinic along with CD of his MRI...regional facility Dr. saw issue on their MRI in seconds. Just saying... Take care...box will wait...

Nice looking 45 Gerald...love looking at these type of tools you guys have...some people like looking at golf clubs and such...I can't get enough looking at old tools...must be a vitamin deficiency.
November 9, 20169 yr i admire your use of hand tools to make such fine projects. me? i'd knock that off with my dovetail jig and dado blade on the table saw.

Don't have either as a lack of room dictates what I can use. Back when the shop was in a pole barn, yeah, I could and did use those tools. More fun now. And, I get better joints ( in the wood, not the knees) The Dovetail jig sits over on the floor, haven't use it for a long time. Shop time now is my "Quiet Time" until the cussing starts in...
