Auger bit box holder, part2

Featured Replies

Ok, back to a bit of woodworking.    Now that the internet "issues" have been fixed, I might be able to post a few items..

I got holder blank #2 into the clamps this morning

glue up 1.JPG

Only needed three chunks, this time around.   Will let this sit awhile.   Now that a certain machine is about ready to go..

I might make use of this yard sale find.   As for maxi-mouse?   meh, save it for saw plates.

Next, needed to cut the sides to match the holder.    Ran a pencil around a bit, then a combo square to mkade some lines..

lines in the Pines.JPG

Plan is to cut along the line. Then, add the smaller piece to the holder already made.   This will be the "bottom page"  of the book.    Needed to add some slots to the holder.

I saw the lines.JPG

Marked a couple lines where each shank was, cut a knife line to guide the saw.   Then saw as much as I could.    Then use a couple chisels to chop the waste away...

slots made.JPG

Something like these two.   Small chisel to chop, 1" chisel to pare away the junk.   Finally got all the slots chopped and pared..

slots done.JPG

These slots will allow the bits to be raised up enough to be taken out of the holder.   Did some trim to fit on the narrow sides and end pieces.    A spot or schmear  of Elmer's, and some 1" brass nails to add each side piece.    Then...more clamps, including one to pull things into almost square...

glue up 2.JPG

The one at the diagonal.    Even using the end vise and a benchdog to help out.    Will let this set a while as well......bench is a bit too full right now, anyway...

If'n when I can see the top of my bench again...I'll start drilling the second holder.......have a different scheme to try out, drill wise.   stay tuned

You are moving right along with it! Great Job!

It is bad when even the camera's  battery gives out on me.    I even ran out of cuss words tonight!   Holder #1 has been sanded down.    Set that aside, have a second one that came out of the clamps tonight....

flattened.JPG

Got the thing all nice and flattened up.   Then tried a different drillski..

BIG drill.JPG

1/2" chuck drill with a cord.  Spade bits had finally been found.    This is the bigger of the two bits.   Not too worried about the blowout on the side.....I also chased the holes with a "normal drill and bit..

brace & bit.JPG

Those two smaller holes wer done with a 1/2" spade bit.  Had to go with the brace and bit because the spade bits were a bit too short.    Marked out a center line..

center lines.JPG

So I would know where to saw.   Saw?   Well, the blank will not fit into the bandsaw....

rip saw.JPG

Tonight, the dang thing decided  to drift to the left a bit...wouldn't be "Operator Error" would it?   Then a crosscut..

crosscut.JPG

before the "flip"

flip.JPG

After the waste was "flipped off"  .    Had slots to chop, and some extra drilling and carving to do...

choppered.JPG

12mm Japanese Mortise chisel, among others.   Went through quite a few chisels.   Used the drill again, as a few holes weren't quite as deep as needed....along with one or two that were too deep.

test fit.JPG

Test fit some more bits.  Biggie is an 18.   all the way down to a #4.  Marked a few more sides, and ran them through the bandsaw.   Trying to keep track of which end goes where is a royal PITA, but...here we  go...

stacked up.JPG

Still have to pin and glue the sides in place.   Bottom one is done, top one was done tonight.   Still need at least one, maybe two thinner "pages" made.  And a lid.

Ran out of cuss words?    That IS a first!   Stay tuned......

That is really coming together. Great job!

Time to step away and take a break...:P Something to do for pleasure & relaxation; tomorrow will be another day...

You amaze me Steven with what comes out of your shop space. Appreciate you sharing! Now, grab a cool drink, kick back and give the knee a break! B)

Snuck down to the shop for a bit, before the Boss decides to go for a road trip...

Glue-ups are in the clamps..

holder #2 glue up.JPG

Had to trim a few finger joints, to get rid of some gap-osis......Outsides are pinned and glued in place.   That pipe clamp laying there?

holders 3 and 4.JPG

One of the thinner holders is in the clamp.    Had to cut the boards to rough size.    The other one will take a ride on the pipe clamps  when the first one is done. Still have holes to drill, and the like.  Need to size what is left of the outside pieces...outside pieces.JPG

Still trying to keep the fingers in line.   I also will need a lid made up.   Hmmm, handles on the ends, or on the lid?    R. Jennings style?   Or Irwin?

I'm worn out just reading about all you do!!!

Amazing!!!

I am like Harry, I get worn out watching the process. That is really starting to look nice.

Glue-ups are out of the clamps, next one is in the clamps...

A few toys..

toys.JPG

Got the two holders sanded and match to each other  ( only mistake was one was the wrong way) so I went ahead and hinged them up..

hinged up.JPG

On this view, the top one goes left to right, bottom one goes right to left.   Have some holes to fill.   Nails were brass PLATED, so I just drove them on down, and will fill the holes.

Got the next holder cut to size and a test fit..

test fits.JPG

It's in there.  This is also the next glue up.  Needed the old screwdriver to drive the hinge screws with.  Lots of sanding....too many nails in the way to risk a plane.   Now...

I think I will have to re-train Igor, or his cousin Eugen to use that broom-shaped object.....

Looking good Steven!

Playing hooky again today......I did get the latest glue-up out of the clamps, as I had a need for clamps..

lid repairs.JPG

Old lid had shrunk a bit.   This USED to hold the entire selection of auger bits.    Once I get  the lid fixed, I can decide which bit of scrap to use for holding squares and such

scraps.JPG

Either the Cherry, or that chunk of Walnut under it?   hmm...

Glue up is out of the bigger clamps, glue up4.JPG

Next time in the shop, I'll trim it to size.   Glue up #3 is sitting ON the stacked holders.....seems I found even MORE bits to stash.    This is AFTER I had filled both holders full...

more bits.JPG

Even a roll-up?   That big guy on the right?   A Craftsman (Irwin) #20, minty, never used.   And just  too BIG for this box.   Maybe?  The roll up?

roll up.JPG

A complete set of HiKraft bits, from a place outside of Logan, OH.    These were made there.  Might keep this set aside....There are a few smaller bits to find homes for...small bits.JPG

The augers WERE on top, the other four bits?    Might put all of this into one holder.    Compared to that  biggie bit..

mutts and JEFF.JPG

20/16"...no wonder it hasn't been used.   Smallest auger bit there is a 4/16"   Yep, Mutts & JEFF.

The Clark expansive bit is in one of the holders.   All the larger bits are too.    Need to make  new homes for  the rest of the crew.....and MAYBE sell that #20?

road Trips today, yard/BARN sales tomorrow.    Maybe Sunday I can hide in the shop for awhile?   before I get too used to playing Hooky...

Ok, kept thinking ( Dangerous, I know)  about using a "rounds"  plane to make the grooves......and thinking.....and...finally wandered back down to the shop for a little experiment..

I have two cutters , bead cutter actually.....one @ 5/8" and the other  @ 3/4".....I reground the 3/4"  one into a rounds shape...roughly.   Took awhile, taking care NOT to burn the steel.    Why regrind these?    Well, I very much doubt I will ever have a NEED for either of them, anyway.    Might as well give this a go.

Needs to be set very shallow, at first.   Then, when it no longer cuts....down the depth down a bit, and go again.    Have made ONE groove, so far.......three settings on the Stanley #45.   Might go a bit deeper.    Have those five larger bits to make grooves for.    Then, cover the grooves up to make a holder for the shanks.

Thinking (  there I go again..) about those smaller bits......maybe just a straight cutter to match their sizes?    Then maybe a block plane to ease the corners a bit?

Pictures in the morning,,,,,after I sleep on this awhile..had to rig a jig up, to hold the blank still long enough to groove it.    I also needed the LONG rods, as the short ones were a bit too short.

Just a thought.....those cut-offs from the first two holders?     Maybe use those to help hold the shanks?

So far, have only ground the 3/4" bead cutter......the 5/8" is safe...for now:ph34r: maybe.   So you all in the morning......

Well, maybe a tease?:o

This is the Stanley #45, set up with the "round" cutter, used to be a 3/4" bead cutter..

stanley 45.JPG

Not sure IF  I will need the depth stops, thinking the skates might do that job.   Had to switch out the short rods for the longer ones....wide cutter.

The jig?

jigged.JPG

There is a start of the groove going on....

grooved.JPG

Might have to go a bit deeper?   After all, that #20 auger is a bit large..

biggie bit.JPG

#20 = 1-1/4"  diameter.   Yep, might need a few more cuts.   Groove is after three tries, reset after each.   Have five grooves to do with this holder.    Top holder will use a different cutter...or three.

IF I keep the cuts shallow, very little chattering goes on....except for me, that  is.    Try again after sleeping this off.....stay tuned.
