October 11, 20169 yr I am looking at getting a low angle block plane for fine trimming - banding, miters, etc. My question is should I get the standard size low angle block plane or the low angle apron plane by Veritas? Thank you for the help. Edited October 11, 20169 yr by Chips N Dust
October 11, 20169 yr Chips, I do not have experience with the Apron plane, but I do with the standard Veritas Low Angle, I have one. I use it for a whole lot of "stuff" in my shop, it's always near by. I use it to chamfer edges of anything, I use it to trim end grain, I use it to plane small areas, and I did I say I use it for end grain? It excels at end grain trimming, cuts through end grain like a knife and butter, no chatter. The fit and finish is fine as well, very nice instrument. For what you are doing, I can vouch for the plane I have, but for the apron plan I cannot say. It appears a tad small and light for my taste, I like some weight. But that may not matter to you. Hope this helped a little.
October 11, 20169 yr I have all three.... the std size LA plane w/ the PM-V11 iron for a recommendation... pure pleasure to use and you'll do more w/ it than you plan to...... consider these also... Edited October 11, 20169 yr by Stick486
October 11, 20169 yr I have the Veritas low angle block and it is a wonder. Love the adjustable mouth. It cuts and does not chatter.
October 11, 20169 yr I have the Veritas DX-60 block plane from Lee Valley with the PM-V11 blade, and I love it. Use it on most projects. I highly recommend it. I have no experience with the apron plane you mentioned, so I can't comment on that one. I agree with everything John Morris said.
October 11, 20169 yr Author Thanks for the input guys! I think I will go with the Standard Block at this point. I was also planning on the PM-V11 blade and I see a lot of you also have that blade on yours. Thanks Again,
