Delta 46-460

Featured Replies

If this is out of line or in the wrong place I apologize. I've been kind of hankering for a midi lathe for awhile. Jet  would be my first choice but have also considered the Delta. The Jet has been in the 800 dollar range and the Delta 550-650. Today on Amazon the Delta currently is listed at $361.00. It was $375.00 when I first looked at it a couple hours ago. Every time I look, it's cheaper. Is something going on with Delta? I haven't really notice the price dropping any where else though?

Steve

Delta has had problems with parts supply which was resolves 18 to 24 months ago. If it is an older model then parts will be hard to find although I have seen that they can be found on Ereplacements. For the long run go with Jet. Then there is the question of which model are we talking about. There are a lot of 10 inch Jets out there some in the box, I think this model is d/c. There is a newer model Delta that is supposed to be pretty good.

So the main question is which models you found and what you want to do with them? I have a Jet 1442 and a Powermatic 3520B now. Had a Delta Midi when I started turning. I think for current longevity and parts Jet is the answer. Same company owns Jet and Powermatic.

Steve, FWIW...Don't know how this compares to either the Jet or Delta but I see Woodcraft has the Rikon VS currently on sale in their monthly flier...or Indy location I-69 S to 96th St exit,; go back east across I-69 to first stoplight, Turn Right on Hague Road...follow that down to 86th St. Street, then back right (west)...kinda screwy wind around way to get there...Maybe Ft. Wayne has a Woodcraft-IDK.

Our club secretary has similar model (a little older) and he really likes it. He turns mainly pens, ornaments, tool handles with his.

I have had my Delta 46-460 for about three years now with no regrets or failures.  It is smooth running, quiet and I think it is the only midi with a 1 HP motor.  It was when I bought mine.  I would recommend buying it.

Thanks for the replies but I think there is just something strange about the offer on Amazon. Here's what I mean

$619.00 · CPO OutletsFree shipping, no tax
$649.99 · Performance Line Tool C...Free shipping, no tax
$425.00 · eBayUsed, No tax
$649.00 · WalmartFree shipping, no tax
$604.80 · ToolBarn.com

These are current prices from several suppliers on the 46-460. Current price on Amazon is $352.36 When I first started watching yesterday it was around $375.00 and the page said there were 7 new ones available. There are still 7 available at 352.36

It's the old "to good to be true" thing in my mind. Just don't know about it.

I think they have a price typo.  Not too long ago William Young and Joe G from Wood Working Friends bought them for $565.00.  I saw at Sawmill Creek this morning that someone posted that deal so you should order before everyone else does.  Amazon is reputable enough.

Scroll down the page at Amazon.  There is a special discount they have listed which is the price difference.

I have seen amazon do that from time to time - the price is way below everyone else but only for a short period to time.

If you are not worried about the Delta brand, you should jump. If I were in the market for a midi, I would. It's best not to try to understand the 'zon;s pricing policies; just roll with the good deals. I see it just went up to $373.

Well, I did it, cost myself about 20 bucks by not doing it yesterday but still a couple hundred less than anywhere else. It helped that I had over $160.00 rewards from my Amazon card. Good chance I won't even do much with it for a while but just too good of a price to pass up.

You won't regret it Steve.  I would bet you will be using it for all of your small stuff before long.  It is quite nice.

I'll be interested in hearing your review of it. Congrats!

Congrats! Looking forward to a review when you get it.

Congrats! You made a good choice jumping in.

Actually when I think about it.  That would be a good price for a used one.

Congrats Steve on your new addition to the family. Sure you'll be making chips with it in no time.

Steve, I saw on another forum that the Delta 46-460 you bought has a slight flaw.  The ON-OFF switch is wired wrong and ON is Off and vise versa.  It is supposed to be an easy fix.  Here is what I found.  If you want I can open mine up and look to be sure.

Mine did come with the F/R switch wired backwards. I fixed it in a couple of minutes though. It probably isn’t worth fixing but I’m kinda anal :-/ If you remove the switch housing from the lathe by removing the 4 phillips head screws, all you have to do is reverse the 2 wires going from the R/F switch to the circuit board. It’s the 2 terminals circled in red in the photo below. They’re quick connect terminals so it’s just a matter of unplugging them and plugging them back into the opposite terminal. The terminals on the board are labeled M+ and M-.

Thanks Dan

I will save this picture. Fred Hargis had given me a heads up about this in a pm. Mine is, in fact, wired backwards. Hadn't planned on doing anything with it but if it's that easy I may address the situation.

Definitely not a deal breaker.  I am just surprised that Delta went ahead and sold them like that.  It could be viewed as a safety issue.  I wonder what they would say if you called them about it?  It wasn't part of the deal.  They would probably tell you to take it to a repair center wagering you will live with it instead.

Somebody suggested that's why they were so heavily discounted. If the issue was discovered after they left the factory it could've gotten expensive to have them all "repaired". and maybe was just cheaper to sell them as is. At any rate, you are right about it not being a deal breaker.
