And...Pine isn't exactly the easiest to turn...

Considering the pine here came from  a couple resawn 4x4s....

I have hundreds of pictures of my projects. No kidding.  I haven't downloaded because of WOOD magazine. I downloaded them there and they change their web site and erased all of it. While doing a search on Google, I saw one of my pictures???  Is that how it is? Should I care? Do my project pictures become part of everything else on the web. Again........should I care.  I guess I'm just to much of a skeptic.

Whatever was posted on Wood went directly to the web which in turn brought people to Wood who were searching the web for what you made and posted.  Some of my turnings are now associated with Ted's million free plans BS.  Go to Google Images and search inside out turning and look for this vase.  If you visit the page it goes to Ted's woodworking.  It was only ever posted to Wood magazine.  It is thievery and I really don't think Wood can be blamed.  It is the internet's way.

Somehow the picture vaporized.  Here is the link and the vase.  Click the link choose the picture and then visit page.  Takes you to Ted's woodworking.

I think almost any image on the internet can be copied, pasted and used where ever the person who copies it wants to.

You are right of course, for the simple reason, how do you stop it? From what I've been told the simple act of posting a picture, video, or article automatically  provides some copyright protection. That's one reason I have posted some of my videos, Although I suspect some of my ideas will be copied, there is a hard evidence it was my idea in the first place. With that, and a buck or two I can get a cup of coffee! :)

Kelly actually copying from a website depends on the permissions that the webmaster sets. He can allow copying or not. That is kind of interesting about the pics from Wood.

I am not saying they were legal to so or not, but do a google image search and you can copy and paste most of those images. Where and how google gets them, I do not know. The pictures from WOOD, who knows if they were taken off the actual WOOD website or from a google search.

Gerald - you are right on about stopping copying of pictures.  It doesn't take too much coding to stop ALL "right click" downloads.  It all depends on the webmaster and his/her expertese in HTML coding.

Maybe I opened a can of worms!

There was no intention of using anyone's images other than to show other Patriot members your talents and to get the "thought juices" flowing.

Yes, it is true that posting your work here will ultimately have it appear in a Google search by anyone using the Internet. Some of those Internet users are unscrupulous leeches who try to use your work to make money for themselves. Unfortunately, most of use don't have the funds to officially copyright our work prior to posting it on the web.

One thing you can do that may give you a little more peace of mind is to watermark your images. There are different schools of thought about if this helpful. You need to decide for yourself. Even this isn't a guarantee that your images won't be poached.

Here is a link to a free PC based program for image manipulation- including watermarking. The software Pixlr is from Autodesk- the CAD people. It is available for both PC and Mac.

https://pixlr.com/desktop

Look for the Download button. This is a large file (150M) and installs on your computer.

So you don't have to spend a lot of time learning how to watermark the images, here's a link to a tutorial explaining how to do it-

http://www.creativehabitspodcast.com/create-watermark-pixlr-free-image-editor/

If you are a Photoshop user, Lightroom will do the same thing but I don't think it is free.

Edit: The tutorial listed above refers to using the Pixlr Editor. That is an online application and can be found here- https://pixlr.com/editor/

Even with coding to prevent downloading or copying, a good screen capture software program can pull images with quality enough for the Internet- just another thought to confuse the matter even more

Later, I can address this entire subject in detail in a separate topic, I will do so today. It is a big subject, with great arguments from both sides.

But for now I'll leave yall with this, we can restrict our community to no end, we can make our community completely closed off, to members only, and nothing can be downloaded, nothing can be shared, nothing can be promoted (sponsors lost, our site closes closes down).

And, we can be completely open, with an open heart, sharing, wanting to tell the world about our great community here, open to all, copy away, download all you like (our file downloads area is open to all, including guests who are not signed in) and we can have a great presence in the world of Google, so others find us, and join us.

Yes, there is an in between in there somewhere, what that is, perhaps we can talk about in another Topic, I promise I'll start one today, with more details and explanation.

John, My comment was just to explain what happens on the web. I am webmaster for our turning clubMagnolia Woodturners and I allow copying of images. To me we are not professionals (most of us) and share with one another and to get more people interested in the craft. As you said freedom to share and copy.

I give most of my work away, except those my wife claims. And most of us also share "How did he do that". The fun part is jut getting there and helping others.

You bet Gerald!

I did not see any commentary in this Topic in a negative light, but I do want to clarify some things, it's best for all of us, in the spirit of full disclosure, no surprises, and I also want to state our spirit of use in our community.

Everyone is fine, it's all good, and this actually is a very productive discussion, after all this is your community Patriot Woodworker's! You have the right to know what goes down in front, and behind the scenes.

I don't mind anyone copying anything I make and post a picture of.  In fact it feels good to share and know that someone has benefited from it.  I just hate the idea of someone using it commercially in the sense of Ted's Woodworking.  Any individual that wants to make and sell an idea I gave them, be my guest.
