September 20, 20169 yr Kitchen cabinets made of Oak frames with Oak veneer. The do look good.......................not good enough for my wife. She has wanted for years to paint them white. I have fought for years to leave them alone. She won. She said, if you want to keep them Oak, I want you to clean them, and refinish them. If you don't want to (I DIDNT) I'm going to paint them white. I said OK, but I won't do any of the cleaning or painting. She is so picky that I can't do the job she wants. We agreed. However that didn't let me off the hook. I had to remove all doors, drawers, and the associated hardware. She got the Rustoleum kit and watched the videos. There are doors all over the house. I got up this morning and couldn't find a bowl for my cereal, I couldn't find a spoon, I couldn't even find the drawer that has the silverware.
September 20, 20169 yr That is the way they are. Once the idea hits they keep hinting and poking. Eventually it comes to I will find someone to do it. My wife wants a kitchen island built on top of an old Singer sewing machine stand and butcher block (end grain) top. Now get this 3 foot by 2 foot and make the top 3 inches thick. We now have a temporary compromise To use the cutting board I made 3 years ago.
September 20, 20169 yr Popular Post You can't fight City Hall. Anything you say now will remain in the archives forever so please only good remarks from here on out. Some ideas for you. Those are looking great. It wasn't that hard to find a spoon for my cereal. They never looked that good when they were new. Remember she knows where she put the sharp knives.
September 20, 20169 yr Author The cabinets doors have European round door hinges. I lost a screw that went under the stove. When I put the door back on I used a screw from my shop. It was a gold colored screw. I didn't say anything, just put it on. No One would ever see it...................she did. What can I say, you know where this story ends.

September 20, 20169 yr After 45 years I just go along to get along. When I stray from that there's hell to pay.
September 20, 20169 yr BTDT - I relented on the master bath vanity and utility room cabinets. I do have to admit that they look pretty nice. We put new pulls on them to bring them a little more up to date. Cal

What can I say, you know where this story ends. So Ron, did you have to move the stove to find the screw or were you lucky enough to drag it out with a magnet or old clothes hanger? Sometimes it's just best to eat the cereal directly from the box...no bowl or spoon to wash or better yet, "hey dear, I'll have to run to the hardware store to get a replacement screw." That will get you out of harms way and you can grab a couple of sausage/egg burritos at McD's while out. Loved the story though!!
September 20, 20169 yr If you want to paint the oak I would seal the grain before doing so. Why because in 10 years she may want the oak back and then you can just remove the paint if it sits on top of a polished non grainy surface.
September 20, 20169 yr Now come on guys, if it was really that bad those gals would have run us all off long ago. Admit it , Hillary will finally get to put the male end of the stick where she has wanted since their last white house drama. But wait, I think I just now realized we might be getting between a rock and a hard place. Am I seeing some of the evidence of a few of the mice jumping ship and turning into --------females. Too bad we can't make all the lawyers and politicians go fight our wars and leave us alone.
September 20, 20169 yr Author She did some research on redoing the cabinets. She talked to others that had done it. She looked up the reviews on the Rustoleum cabinet transformer KIt. has great reviews and It has everything necessary to clean, prime and seal. Friends have done it and it looks and lasts great. Comes in two sizes, i think.
September 20, 20169 yr benjimin moore has some really outstanding oil based enamel in great colors and the stuff dries fast and is tough as nails!!!!! If laid flat and sprayed or brushed it comes out superflat and shiny.
September 20, 20169 yr I refuse to paint wood items. If the Boss wants it painted, I hand her the brush.
September 20, 20169 yr Ugh! How can you ruin real wood cabinets with a coating of PAINT? I had some friends with some beautiful and expensive cherry cabinets in their kitchen. Solid wood, dovetailed drawers, the whole nine yards. I walk in one day to find them painted white.

I heard of an interview with a couple celebrating their 75th anniversary. The interviewer asked the husband to what he attributed their successful marriage. He responded, "I learned years ago that I'd rather be married than win an argument."
September 20, 20169 yr I have repaired a fair amount of white furniture. I have about a dozen different cans of white touch up lacquer. Generally one does not do it and I need two or three to get a decent match. I think other than green, white has to be one of the hardest colors to match because most any white is not "pure white." And lighting and even surrounding colors can change the perceived hue. And realize that painting oak, the grain is going to telegraph through. Grab a piece of oak from the scrap bin and have her paint it first to see if she likes the result.
