This week's featured Patriot Turner is Gerald.

I've copied a few of his gallery pictures, here, for your viewing pleasure-

As you can see, Gerald does some awesome work. He has shared his ideas and techniques with our turners and graciously answered questions about turning processes.

It is really great having you here Gerald and we look forward to having your input here in the Turning Forum!

The latest Woodturning OnLine newsletter arrived. As always it has great information. One of the article relates to a previous discussion we had a few weeks ago concerning Steady Rests. The article discusses turning a Trembleur.

These turnings typically don't use the standard steady rest but instead use a string steady rest. Here's a link to the article-

Several of our members turn Christmas Ornaments. Most of them include at least one finial turning. The newsletter included a nice PDF article on turning finials-

Finally, Woodworkers Journal is offering free plans for a turned apple birdhouse-

Safe Turning!

WHEW... Nice.. very nice ''stuff''...

I really like this feature. Gonna have to try that apple bird house!

Steve

I also like this feature. It is a nice touch to include in the forum

That is some awesome turnings Gerald.

Thanks for the other information Lew.  When we talked about finials the other day I went looking for the with the string steady and couldn't find it.  The apple looks like a great project.

Thanks for the write up Lew. I added another album of bowls & platters last night

I just looked at the plan for the apple bird house.  I didn't realize it was full sized.  I thought ornament size.  I did some acorn bird houses quite a few years ago using Redwood 2X material salvaged from discarded picnic tables and used white cedar for the top  salvaged from a discarded trestle.  The inside is built to accept a piece of 4X4 and was turned between centers using the 4X4 to drive is on the lathe. Made sixteen in all and gave them as Christmas presents.  I added some fake cardinals.  They are all displayed indoors.  No one wanted to put them outside.

Nice! I like the inclusion of the brass pieces. They really add a nice touch.

Very Nice - I would not want to put them outside either!

Thanks Lew.  I gave a stand with each one so it could be set where ever.  I turned the brass pieces for the stand too.  I also gave a piece of chandelier chain to hang them from the ceiling is desired.  I made the brass hangers so they swiveled.  Once the chain settled the bird house could be adjusted to point where wanted.

WAY too beautiful to put outside. I made my birdhouses out of cedar and after 2 years of that sun at this altitude they weathered badly

I rebuilt them this Spring.

Dan that is a fine looking piece. There you go turning metal , was going to ask

Really nice work Dan. Those stands are way cool.

Steve

Thanks for the great reviews on the bird house.
