Ideas for awesome piece of cherry

Featured Replies

I have this really pretty piece of cherry that is 15/16 X 9 1/2 X 23 but I just can't decide what to do with it.image.jpeg

i thought about bout a face-grain cutting board with the cherry sandwiched between two maybe 2" pieces of walnut and then walnut breadboard ends with cherry pins. Any other ideas?

it's a pretty piece, but i wouldn't hesitate to cut it up and make something out of it.

what do you need around the house?  is there something that a friend or neighbor could use?

i had some scrap mahogany a bit a go, glued it up and made candle sticks for a relative.  she was thrilled.

the grain is nice, but not spectacular.

You could send it to me, and I will make something out of it and you would not have to worry about what to make - a WIN-WIN :D

LOL too funny, yea I am too but I am strictly a wood turner, so my ideas are limited to that :)

Maybe a small box like this?

It's new owner uses it to hide his stash of candy.  Seems all the kids know that Pastor has a stash in his office at the church...

Use another wood for the lid you could get two 4"X7"X4" boxes if you rip it in half.

May be less expensive to send to me instead of Chips if that helps! :P

If you're in to clocks, good start for a mantel clock case. At 15/16" thick, if you have a band-saw, you might re-saw some or all into thinner pieces for clock parts. A box like Steven made is pretty cool too.

Maybe a nice candle box with dovetail joints.

One of my favorite pieces of all time, Lew's candle holders and box, since the first day I saw these, these have always impressed me to no end. The design, the deep rich color, the sheen of the finish, just a really fantastic piece.

Here's a little short shelf I made, just for another idea.

Lew:

What stain/finish did you put on these items?

Thank you,

They are stunning.  Definite eye catchers.

All the ideas mentioned are good, so all I can do is wait to see what you do with it!

These are all awesome ideas! I'm thinking I might try a couple small boxes. Lew's dovetailed box and candle holders is are indeed awesome! But I think I might go with a small simple box. Maybe try to use my hand tools a little more for this build. I will be sure to post whatever it is. Thanks guys.

That is a nice shelf John. I like the dowel maker. Have never seen a dovetail joint cut that way. I have always used my router table.
