September 6, 20169 yr Here is the start of a shop storage project. I got the idea from a Woodsmith plan that had two stackable cabinets on them, then one day I say this plan on another site where instead of two cabinets, one cabinet with "L" sides. So, like in my normal fashion, neither plan works for what I wanted and where I wanted it, so I had to modify the dimensions and somewhat combine the 2 plans. Here are a couple of pictures showing the start: This one is showing the layout of the two sides - notice my "plans" on the paper next to the tape measure. Here are the two sides cut out. Next step - dados for the top, bottom, middle and fixed shelves (forgot to get those pictures last night) The upper part of the cabinet will be for router bit storage. The lower part will be for routers and misc. related items. Dimensions are 21" wide x 16" deep (bottom)/8" deep top) x 75" tall. Thank you for looking, Edited September 6, 20169 yr by Chips N Dust

September 7, 20169 yr Any project for the shop is a good project. It is nice to have related items all in one place if possible.

September 7, 20169 yr That's the great thing about having a shop, its a work in progress. It seems that after a few projects on and off the bench we all have that idea of a better place to store the tools that makes the next project go a little smoother.
September 7, 20169 yr I feel that plans are really helpful. Not so much to follow step by step, but to see the end result concept. I don't think, that, with one or two exceptions (requiring exacting dimensions), i. e. Fibonacci Gauge, I have ever followed a published plan exactly. Looking at a plan only gives me a rough "shape". Once I have the concept in my mind, I end up modifying or changing the original plan to suit my end result needs. Many of my projects for me start out as a sketch on a scrap of paper with rough dimensions only. Those dimensions are usually minimum acceptable and most likely will get altered during the build. Like Kelly, I too, feel that there is nothing wrong with combining two similar designs to incorporate the best features of both. Look forward to seeing the finished project, Kelly.

That is exactly how this one came about - started with one idea from one set of plans (still having to modify though), to the inspiration from the second plan and now, a rough sketch on the notepad with project specific dimensions. And, a few of those dimensions have changed as it comes together.
September 7, 20169 yr Author Here is some progress from last night - top, bottom and fixed shelves cut, and the whole unit dry fit together. I still have to drill shelf pin holes in the upper and lower sections and some sanding before I glue it all together. Also, I have to route a rabbit on the back for the back, but it is progressing along. Thanks for looking
September 7, 20169 yr AH, KELLY! Ummm, ya need more room for your routers! Nowhere near big enough...don't go telling me you only have a couple, I'll have to jerk your "man card".

We need to sit Kelly down and educate him on the advantages of having multiple set-ups! If he had had the routers properly set-up, that case would be done and he could be onto the finishing stage.

September 9, 20169 yr Author For the last two nights I have gotten home late from work so no new progress. However, I plan on getting this knocked out this weekend unless something else pops up. I will post updates along the way.

Hopefully you will have a pop up lull and get it done. Good luck with that.
