July 20, 20169 yr I was ask to make this paddle for a friends sister who is a teacher. She got her first good teaching job and he wanted to give her this as strictly a joke. However if they were still allowed to use these in school we might not see all the problems we see today! Just my opinion. Made from some nice White Oak.
July 20, 20169 yr Problem is John, in my neck of the woods, all our teachers are liberal, so they'd be chasing down all the conservative kids just to whack them just because!
July 20, 20169 yr Those were the good old days! When I taught, most of the problems occurred with safety violations (safety glasses, horse play, etc.). In earlier years, we used the board of education to remind offenders of the seriousness of their actions. The "punishment" was never dealt with at the time of the infraction. The gentle reminder was administered at the end of the day. We would form a big circle with the offender and me in the middle. Lots of anticipation of just when the board would drop. Lots of laughter, too. One gentle wack. I think the idea of everyone watching was more of a deterrent than the actual wack. I don't think anyone ever got thru the 3 years without at least one wack. If they got a wack, they had to sign the paddle. If they signed the paddle, just for the devilment, they got a wack. Former students still talk about "getting the paddle" and laugh about it. In later years, the use of the paddle was no longer allowed. Our shop's discipline was changed so that it related to the "crime". No safety glasses- wear a blindfold for 30 minutes. Horseplay- wear a big old aviators mitten. Running- walk on crutches. Unfortunately, today, even these creative methods cannot be used as it might bruise ego or embarrass the children. "Discipline" no longer exists. It's a trip to the guidance counselor.
July 21, 20169 yr I had to laugh at this one. My teacher had our shop teacher make a huge paddle and it had a hundred holes drilled in it. He kept it above the chalk board and would take it down to threaten unruly guys at our high school. He never ever used it, just threatened with it. One evening guys got in his room and used cement nails to permanently fix it to its position above the chalk board. Needless to say he nearly lost his finger nails when he tried to take it down Years later we told him we did it and we all laughed.
July 22, 20169 yr I was in elementary school when corporal punishment was still in effect. Can you believe it, the name of our principal was Mr. Kreuger! And he used the paddle liberally. I got it once. In our school the teacher would just send you to the principal, and if he thought you deserved a paddle, you'd get it. And yep, I remember humiliation tactics by our teachers, chalk erasers being thrown across the room, and being sent to stand outside the classroom facing the wall. I also remember by the time I got to Junior High, the corporal punishment was banned, and I can vividly recall the classes being noisy and uncontrollable.
November 29, 20196 yr I really don't like today's kids. They think they can do as they please and no one can touch them... I would be behind bars if I thought school...

November 29, 20196 yr Popular Post My first few years were in a parochial school. The nun's had no issue with using the paddle. NUN at all !
November 29, 20196 yr Popular Post Don't forget about the parents who don't want teachers to apply discipline. Some teachers went to far, in my opinion, but authority needs to be established again in the classroom and in the school. I had better leave before I have to draw a circle on the blackboard and put my nose in it for a few minutes.

This starts in the home, and in this our society as a whole is failing at. Our job as parents is to train our children in the ways of the world. The real world where you fall down and get back up and carry on. No participation trophies, and you sometimes get fired from your job, or the place shuts down. Not the end of the world, you get another job and life goes on.
