July 3, 201610 yr I wanted to turn some round ornaments. I had some maple and some wood that I don't remember the name of. I will do better next time, a small crack turned up and I don't like it.. It is actually round, the camera angle my wife used makes it look distorted. I want to make one of the Ebony when it dries out completely. I was told that it is VERY hard and will dull most tools.
July 3, 201610 yr Author I had a problem with the soft wood, hard wood combination. The softer touch needed on that maple, as I came off the really hard stuff caused some added problems. I hope to do better nex time
July 6, 201610 yr My first thought of the dark wood is walnut bit since it's harder than maple my guess is shedua (african walnut) or perhaps mesquite?
July 6, 201610 yr Author I have never heard of it, Shedua. It was light, soft, and ready to use. I have walnut, but wanted to try something new. Problem is that it resembles other woods and Isn't really as special as some of the others.
July 6, 201610 yr I use curly shedua for sankt and pepper shakers and pizza cutter/ ice cream scoop handles. It sands and turns ok but can chip because of the curl.
August 21, 20169 yr What is the paint used on the collar? I think you may be onto something here. How about drilling out the center of the dark wood then hollow. I know easier said than done. All these ideas get in the way of me getting finished with anything
August 21, 20169 yr Author Gerald, I never use paint, but will use stain if the color combination looks good. The red collar wood is a piece of scrap Blood wood. I am one of those guys that saves scraps of those beautiful woods and I try to incorporate the into other projects. Thanks for being a part of the Patriot woodworker. I enjoy you comments and pictures. By the way,.........I am an old fart too :-)
August 21, 20169 yr That's a nice ornament, I know for a fact. turning a sphere is hard. Did you use a template, calipers or ? Steve
August 21, 20169 yr I like the contrasting wood species and also know the problems that can occur. Nice job of over coming them. I didn't notice any of the dark wood dust bleeding over into the Maple. Great. Dan
August 22, 20169 yr Author Steve, I read an entry on this forum that it was very difficult to turn an egg out of wood. I didn't have a problem with it and wondered why. Then I tried a ball and same results. My vision is not great and was blind at one time with detached retinas, I had 3 in a row and two at one time. I believe the cause was all the explosions and artillery in Viet Nam. I used face shields with magnifiers when I first started turning. I can see really good now, with the blended lens glasses and turning good circles is easy. However, I'd rather turn new things. The one pictured is an experiment and I am still working on the technique.
August 22, 20169 yr Ron I have done what is probably a very similar technique on a few of my ornaments. Something I learned watching Sam Angelo, the Wyoming wood turner on youtube. He is a master at blending color IMO. Steve
