Good Monday morning woodworkers! Well out here in the west we are dealing with sweltering heat and it's hard to even get out and cut grass these days. We'll wait until the sun sets then make a mad dash out and run the mower. The shop is a nice and toasty 90 degrees so it's a tad warm in the old woodshop as well but at least it's in the shade.

So, what have you all been up to this weekend in your woodworking endeavors? Please post your pics and stories about your weekend here so we can follow your progress and chime in.

Charles Nicholls

We have a Patriot Woodworker in the hospital right now, Charles Nichols is dealing with some surgery and discomfort so if you'd like, please drop on by his topic and wish him well at Charles in Hospital.

Website FUBAR

We had a FUBAR this past weekend, long story short our server was having some issues so you may have noticed our site was down for a while, we apologize for that, there may be some more interruptions this coming week as we work on securing our site with security patches and upgrades and our site is being moved yet again to a server. So please bear with us and thank you in advance for your patience.

Homes for Our Troops

We are also kicking off another raffle fundraiser for Homes for Our Troops starting appropriately on 4th of July. We'll have some terrific tools up for grabs donated to us for this purpose by our wonderful sponsors. So stay tuned for that!

Our Wiki

Our Patriot Woodwiki is taking shape as we put the final touches on the user interface and we should finally be opening our wiki up for public collaboration and editing and sharing. Below are a few of the "seed" articles that we planted to give our wiki a jump start and to encourage folks to jump in and contribute their knowledge. Please see links below.

College of the Redwoods

Sam Maloof

That's that run down for now folks, have a wonderful week ahead and stay safe in all you do, and please keep coming back and share your stories, life, and work with us here at The Patriot Woodworker.

Tami and I are trying to beat the triple digit heat by heading down to Long Beach and walk around by the water. Since Tami has been having problems with her hip and bouncing around back and forth to the various doctors and PT, I have been trying to be a good "Cruise Director" keeping her occupied by pushing her around in the wheelchair as she can't walk far or long. On the up side it is good for me and my exercise and walking. So nothing going on in the shop right now or in the foreseeable future due to the heat and keeping the wife in line. We hope to take a short road trip in July somewhere here in California, but we have not nailed anything down yet.

I saw John's posting about the TPW "WIKI" and Sam Maloof

http://thepatriotwoodwiki.org/Sam+Maloof

Sam Maloof was raised and lived about 25 miles north of me. He has a great history of his woodworking, artistry and philanthropy as he and his wife were very active in the artistic community. Sam Maloof's home is in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and is open for tours on Thursdays and Saturdays. The grounds, which are beautiful and were Sam's wife's passion, can be toured for free. There are guided tours of the inside of the house and his shop for a fee. So if you happen to find yourself out here in the So. Calif. area and have the time to do so, stop in and take the tour. I had hoped to be able to take Ron and Dorothy Dudelston there when they were out recently, but their time was limited.

Here is the Maloof site link.

The embarrassing thing is Allen, I have never been there myself and the compound is just up the free way from me! Aye ye ye!

During a trip up the coast in the early 90s, we had the pleasure of meeting Sam at his shop. A more gracious and gentle man, I've yet to meet. Unfortunately, I was not fully cognizant of the breadth of his work at the time. I was just thrilled to meet a guy whose book I'd seen advertised.

IIRC, he was heading out for a meeting and we only spoke for a few minutes. We didn't get a tour of the shop or grounds.

We also visited the Espenet shop in Bolinas. No one was there so, we didn't get to see much.

Our two sons and Phyl's mother were with us. Gramma had no interest in woodworking and our young boys were just as unenthused. Hence the short times at each place.

Gene, I have experiences like that in my life too, I remember meeting some incredible human beings but at the time, I did not know how incredible they were till years later, I would hear about them or read up on them by chance. And I kick myself for not being more engaged in the experience at the time when I met them. Your not alone.

I guess that's why the wise will tell us, live every day as if it were your last, and talk to people as if they won't be with us tomorrow. Those are wise words indeed, but impractical on daily basis, since life can get the better of us sometimes right? I am guilty as the next guy for blowing through the day, as if I'll live forever.

I've never heard of the Espenet shop, I'll have to look that one up, thanks for that!

Bolinas is beautiful, too. Kinda quirky but fun.

I am all about quirky Gene, I was raised in quirky!

Just looking at the website now, looks like it would be a fun interlude to a trip up that way.

Espenet Shop link for those who want to see more.

Talk about quirky, our heavily Mormon town of Snowflake just approved permits for two large medical marijuana growing operations. Will probably be the largest such operations in the state.

I'm sure even massively more quirkyness will soon abound.

That's the way it is John. I had never been to Helen Keller's home which is a few miles from us until Allen, Tami, Ron and Dorothy visited. I was showing them where it was and they wanted to go in. It was my first time and I have lived here all my life. I'll drive across the country to see something and miss the jewels right under my nose.

Hmm, that explains why they would want more than one wife.

Nope. Doesn't fit my computational efforts, either. They just finished building a temple here. And, that's a big deal. Only the second one in the state. The hierarchy in SLC must've thought their flock here was worthy. Wonder what they're thinking now.

Guessing the city's perceived need for the tax revenues clouded their judgment.

Ya, that's how they got their foot in the front door. Ridiculous. I always said if it was all about health care and alleviating the pain cancer patients were feeling and increasing the appetite (remember that's how it all started) then they would have agreed to let Walgreens or RightAid pharmacies distribute the stuff just like any other medication is distributed. But they wanted independent street vendor store fronts to do the distribution. It was never about medical reasons.
