Did a bit of Metal Working today...

Featured Replies

Well, over the weekend, in-between rust hunts,  I picked a couple things up at the BORG here in town.

The Stanley No.358 I have has a 1/2" Poplar deck on-board.....just too thick, will not do.     Picked a 1/4" thick slab to replace it.   Will need to cut two dados in it as well as cut it to the shape of the iron deck.  Dados?

Well, there is supposed to be two stock "guides"   that slide out and hold the wood being sawn in place.....sooo, I also need to make the guides.     When I bought the 1/8" x 1/2" x 36"  flat stock....most went to replace the missing one at the top of the saw guides.   Keeps the guides aligned with each other.     I had just over 22" left over.    I picked a couple 4" long hex head bolts....5/16" I think they were.    I needed to drill a hole at each end of the flat stock......#@##@ Dull bits.     Anyway, finally drilled/burned the two holes.    Needed a tap to match the threads of the bolts......first one I tried was way too fat......got out a second one that seemed a better match.

Cussing, oil, more cussing....one hole needed reamed out a bit....no reamer in the shop, but, I had a round file  I could use.    Visegripes to spin it around, until I could get the tap to start.   Finally got both holes tapped.  Next came those two bolts.   hacksaw to cut the hex heads off.   Thread the remains until they were tight in the hole.    Hacksaw the excess off.  Cardio workout today!   Grinder had a new wheel...that was warpped, do NOT buy wheels from Harbor Freight!   Put an older one back on.....works without any vibes going on!.    Ok,  used the grinder to clean things up, like saw marks...

Round a few ends, too.  I thought I had things measured out, as I didn't need the entire 22" in length.   Shorter one was the oops.   Tried to get rid of the saw marks on the "posts"   meh..  Undersides were also cleaned up..

guides,undersides.JPG

All nice and smooth.  Hard to tell where the bolts came through.  had some fuzzy stuff to remove.   Even the shorter one should work just fine.

Next, someday, I will have to see about building the "tree"  these saws used as a stop.    It holds two rods, with one acting as a length stop.  I do have a couple rods, might go out and get some new ones...

One can get a tree for these mitre boxes...IF you win the LOTTO that is....

Just checked the tap's size a bit ago....3/8" x 16 nc    Drill size ( IF I had one) would have been about a 64th smaller  than  3/8"

The 1/2"  I guess referred to the size wrench to turn the hex head with.   I turned the hex head with a 12" hacksaw's blade, instead.

Might see if I can cobble  up a "tree" out of stock from the borgs.....maybe some solid square stock?   Might need a few new drill bits, too......getting expensive to completely rehab the old mitrebox....

Ok, needed to make two dados in the new, thinner deck...

Those little black spots are where the reused screws were too long...by just the tips.  Wasn't too hard too chop these..

Knife two lines, square to the opening.   Chisel to cut out the waste.   Mallet helped...when it wasn't hiding..

Ah, there it is.    This is also how they stored the stops when not in use.  One coat of BLO on the wood...

Slide the saw into place.   Note the rear keeper on top of the guides?   I had to turn it around to where it is properly fitted.

This mitre box and saw will take the place of the little Craftsman mitrebox.

Started work on building a "tree" for this saw.     The tree holds the rods that you set for length of the board you want to cut.   Then you can make repeated cuts using the stops.

Needed to buy another 5/16" steel rod...to make a long rod and a short rod.

Needed to buy a pair of coupling nuts.    Hex sided, but the grinder will change that.    I need to remove the 3/8" x 16 threads on the insides.   Might just run a drill bit down through them.  Just enough that the rod will just slide through.  be a good job for that dull bit I used the other day?

Bought a flat bar stock....3/16" thick by 3/4" wide.   to make the connectiond between the two coupling nuts, and a skate that rests on the bench when the tree is standing up.

Couple of 1/4" x 20 thumbscrews to add.    They will lock the rods in place.   More holes to drill and tap.

And to think, the last time I even worked in a machine shop was back in 1972....

Been slowly cutting a few parts.    Epoxied a couple together...for now.    Will come back and add a few bolts to them.   One connector has been drilled out, to remove the threads inside.....rods slide through better now.  Have a"new" chuck key for the drill press.   Part of an $8 rust hunt the other day..

The Stanley 150 mitre box was just a dollar.   Key was free.  More items to rehab....sigh.....

The epoxy?  Threw it out, worthless junk.    Went to drill, tap, and bolt....

At least it will do until a welder can be used on this mess.  Then a few bolt heads can be cut off?  I even broke a tap tonight...Drill bit also liked to wiggle around, even after a center punch was sued.

As for the Stanley #150....better progress...

Plywood deck is a "pattern" for when I can get some 1/2" hardwood.   Main frame has been derusted, and painted with Rustoleum black.    Need to bring the rest down to the shop, as well.

Ok, the Stanley No.150  will be getting boxed up monday and shipped out.   That Stanley 358 takes up way too much space.    Decided to trash the home-made Tree Project.    Just wasn't coming out right,  not in a mood to fight with it.   There is/was one on fleabay @ $45 + S&H.....might see IF I have enough in paypal to get it...if not...no biggie.   Not really enough room to make use of one, anyway.

Sooooo, for now, the 358 will go where the Craftsman was sitting.   had to adjust things a bit, as the "new" mitrbox is about  twice the size of the "old" one.   Cleared the bench, to be ready for whatever else comes along.    Been buying parts on FeeBay, to complete the Stanley 45.     I also placed a few items for sale over there.  Inventory reduction, I think it is called.     Sell enough, to make enough, to buy want I need for the shop's tool list.    "Extras" will be listed there.   Whatever they bring in?    Right now..the Stanley is sitting at just under $30 with 2 days to go.    I  might be able to buy that last cutter for the 45 with that.

Oh, as for the Stanley #150 rehab?

This si what they will be buying...Monday.

Seems the saw might be a decent match...

Looks like this really turned out well for you.  Well done!
