Well, I got that troublesome panel out of the clamps this morning, planed the glue lines down smooth..

Plane is an old Stanley #4, Type 13.   I also jointed some edges

With a Junior jack plane, clamped up the four sides with a clamp

And tried the bottom panel into the rebates......was a tad too long, and too wide.   Kept "adjusting" the fit, until I had it almost there..

Almost. Look at that corner?   Decided to just go ahead and glue the sides up.

Took just about all of these style clamps.  Might need to be on the lookout for more this season.   Once it was clamped up, and squared up, I could fine tune the panel better.   Problem was..This thing was sitting just about on top of my vises.   Hmmm, time to Crochet..

That is what that hook is called.   Took a few tries, but finally got the panel to actually fit in the rebates made for it..

No glue for it, though.  I did used a few 3/4" long nails to secure the bottom to the sides.. let this mess sit awhile, Lunchtime!!

later on, got the clamps back off, gingerly of course.  Turned the box over, onto it's bottom..

To see how these two planes will fit in the box.   Not too hateful?    Will add a few pieces, to keep things from banging around later.    As for the lid insert, to hold thar big, old shoulder plane?    Drilled two Forstner bit holes, to define the corners and the depth needed back there..

Then we went Old School on it,   LOTS of chisel work, to hog out the waste...

Got back this far, Knife wall for a backsaw, to set the ends.  More chisel work, splinters  were piling up on the floor..

Hmmm, didn't I just sweep this flor awhile ago?   Got things close, switched to a longer Paring chisel, to flatten the "floor"

More stuff on my floor.  Finally  got it to a test fit  level,  lmost..

plane test fit.JPG

Took a couple tries, as there was a high spot in the middle.   Finally got this the fit.   One corner was more squared off on the plane, got that done.  Plane sits all the way in.  needed a way to keep thid in the lid..

walnut keepers.JPG

A little bit of walnut scrap, bandsawn to shape, counter-bored for a screw.   Edges rounded a bit on the belt sander.   Test the rotation...

Because,   that "open" side will be right up against the lid's side,     The non-rebated areas on each end will be where the hinges will go.   I can then open ( or close) the lid,  Plane will stay put, until needed.  Then I just turn the keepers, and lift out the plane.   I'm letting the box cure a bit longer, before I go sawing off the half for the lid.    The this insert will get nailed in place, no glue.    Maybe by the weekend, I might get a finish on the simple, little box?  Stay tuned..

Nice!

I think you must have been in the Navy. You sure do know how to pack a "sea bag"!
