A few weeks ago I built a quilt rack for a lady here in my home town.  It was fun to build so I built another one for a show I have coming up this summer.  Shucks, it may be gone before the show.

Uh, Glue....... Sorry, but I had to say it.  The cross bars have double 3/8" dowels in each end and the lower shelf has three 3/8" dowels on each end.

 

Looks great! You do really clean work.

That's a really nice rack. As Todd said, you do clean work. When he says that, that's quite a compliment.

Looks really good. My wife is a quilter also. I have made several for her and one for a friend. I seldom make anything for nonfamily or close friends.

My wife asked me to make one for a lady that had admired the one I made her. I told the lady I'd do it for cost. She wanted Oak stained to a certain color. I had her get the stain she wanted. I made one similar to the one you made.

When she came to pick it up, I could tell she wasn't too thrilled with it. Finally she said it wasn't the exact color she wanted. She paid me for the lumber, took her quilt rack and left. I was glad she left and told my wife that people like her are why I don't make things for other people. Then there was a knock on the door, the lady came back to get the rest of the stain I didn't use, she paid for it and wanted what was left.

Ron, she must have disliked her choice of stain so much that she wanted more of it.  There's a word for that...masochism.

Anything I make for sale (which isn't much anymore) I make it to satisfy me. That way if no one likes it enough to buy it. I don't mind hanging on to it....or giving it to a relative. They hardly say no and never complain about the stain,

I dealt with people like that early in my career. It is frustrating and leaves you feeling horrible. 

 

Most of them seemed to get weeded out when I started charging professional rates and I also got good at reading people. As unique as we like to think we are, we all behave pretty similarly depending on our intentions. 

Why is it that people want quality, professional grade furniture but want to pay you like a pauper for it?
