How long should Tung oil finish set

Featured Replies

before I should be able to buff it?

I have had very limited experience with Tung oil and have always wondered when I should be able to buff it.

Thanks

I like Tung oil on these tops because it does not give a very slippery surface when dried.

To the touch Charles, you can even buff not fully cured, it just melts and forms a nice sheen on the surface. Are you using pure Tung Oil or does the can say Tung Oil as a marketing scam. Check the ingredients and report back. :)

It's real Tung oil John, the Wood River version from WoodCraft :)

Real Tung Oil takes a bit longer than the big box fraudulent Tung Oil, I'll revise my statement above and say you need to give it about a week before buffing or waxing. Real pure Tung Oil has no other compounds in it to speed up the drying process, since it is pure oil, it relies on the gassing off of natural compounds and of course the relative air around the project. I know that did not answer your question accurately, such as 24 hours, or 36 hours etc. But my own experience with pure Tung Oil, about a week, and I live in dry Southern CA with moderate temps year round.

No problem sir. I was looking for more of a ballpark figure anyway, OK good thanks. :) One week it is.
