Friday, Jan 15th, What's on Your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

Well I have to start off and say a big ROLL TIDE to the National Champions once again.

But that has nothing to do with woodworking so I have it out of the way and now on to woodworking. As i mentioned last week I got my bench put together and was all ready to start to finish and realized I was out of Zinnzer Seal Coat. It is a de-waxed Shellac and I like to spray it first under the Varnish finish I am going to put on. I checked the Big Box stores and they no longer carry it. I went to the local Ace Hardware store that is locally owned and they ordered it for me. It is so nice to deal with small, locally owned businesses. It was ordered Saturday and came in Monday! Now that is service and they are going to keep it stocked for me.

So I am hoping to start spraying the finish on the top of the Walnut Bench this weekend. It is suppose to rain so if the humidity doesn't get too back and should get it done.

While I was waiting for the Seal Coat to arrive I started cutting the tails for a cedar chest I am starting.

I got one panel finished and was on the last two when the dovetail bit broke.

This is the second of these bits that has broken and I am using Cedar. They break right at the small end of the dovetail.

So I made a call to Ron Dudelston who had found a new supplier for these bits. When I checked they had three in stock so I ordered all three so now I will have a spare if they break again while I am almost finished. The bits came in yesterday and I got those last two done, cut the pins and everything fit perfectly.

So I will be working on this Cedar Chest while I am spraying finish on the bench this weekend and would love to finish both but that is probably wishful thinking.

So share with us what's on Your Patriot Woodworker agenda this weekend. All of us here at TPW love to see and read about your projects. Post those pictures and tell us what you are currently working on this weekend.

Finally got the bench "cleared". Whipped out two "fire ax head" replicas (made from Maple) for a buddy involved with a fundraiser for a local volunteer fire company. Rush job- forgot to take pix.

John, I noticed the additional pix at the end of the post. I have been having that happen on my "Wednesday's" posts. I don't add the pix to my post they just show up. Was that the case for your post today?

My weekend started early.  I went to Indy today with 3 woodworkers from our church to the Woodworking Show.  We had a great time but I have to tell you that the show gets smaller each year.  If you take Peachtree's two aisles out of the smal it is pretty meager.  We were through the show in about 2 hours.  Tomorrow I get to set up the 2nd of two loft/desk/bookcase sets I've been building for my two grand daughters.  The shop sure looks empty.

Lew, the pics are not actually inside the post, they are staged after the first topic in every discussion. They are Woodcraft sponsor images, if you click on the image you are taken to Woodcraft's website, and if a purchase is made after that click, The Patriot Woodworker's earn a 5 percent commission on the sale to help offset the costs of running our community. I hope they are not too burdensome, but we have to pay the bills somehow!

Not what he is talking about John. It is the extra pic of the cedar chest at the end of the post.

Awwww! Well, that is a horse of a different color. Does this happen frequently?

Well, bust my buttons! Why didn't you say that in the first place? That's a horse of a different color! Come on in!

It has been happening for the last 2 "Wednesday's" posts. I have to go back and edit the post to delete it. First, like John, I thought I inadvertently added it to the post. This past week, I had forgotten to add an uploaded image to the post. That image was the one that was added at the end of the post. It was also the first image I uploaded. I haven't figured out a pattern of what's happening, yet.

Thanks Lew, I'll see if we can get to the bottom of this.

This is my first post on here (FWOYWWA) in quite some time. Not because I'm not doing anything in the shop but, because it's always been the same thing...week after week...after week.

Still working on Morris chairs. Got the arms all glued ( 3pieces, 3/8 X 5 3/4 X 36. two per chair) Cut each 3/8 piece from an 8/4 white oak. HEAVY! lots of dressing to get them to glue stage. Now I gotta clean 'em all up. Then it's on to assembling the backs and seats.

John, for your topic, if you click on Edit, you'll see the image was uploaded twice, that may have something to do with it.

Twas a trip to Menards, it was.   Picked through their "Value" boards....1x10s and 1x12s, mostly cut-offs.  @ $1.69 + tax.   Got five almost clear pine boards....got to thinking..( dangerous ground, there) about a Stanley No. 888 or 801 tool box...

569a8396f219e_pineboards.thumb.JPG.52944

I also grabbed some sandpaper to sharpen with, some feet pads for the 4x4 Pine table, and that zig-zag ruler...Ruler cost almost as much as the boards did..

Went down and dug out the rest of the tool list's  tools.   Have a handle but will need some hinges.   Hey, have to do something for a project.....Stay tuned, might take awhile...

About the only thing I need a dovetail bit for...is to lay out for hand cut ones.....

For me it was the usual stock and inventory prep. for upcoming shows. I however did take time to turn a dozen pens and 5 more bottle stoppers. We then took some consignment inventory to a local art shop only to discover a gas smell had returned to the house when we got back home. We had the gas company in earlier for the same reason and they told me we didn't have a leak and it was probably a dead mouse in the walls. This time however a different guy found 2 leaks one at a coupler before the meter and one in my supply line running to my shop.

I may not be doing anything in the shop today as it's -7 outside and I don't have any heat until I can get the line repaired.

John, Hope you get it repaired real soon!

Why do these things seem always to happen on the weekends?

I am able to keep the area by my legs warm enough using my camping heater so I'm getting some small turnings done

Plans change! Mimi bought paint to change the color of the shutters we had on the house- before the siding project. Set up a basement spray booth and sprayed 19 shutters with my $14 Harbor Freight purple spray gun.
