Picking in the heart of Redneckville

Featured Replies

well, I "won" a pair of smoother type handplanes on FeeBay the other day.   Two planes cost me one dollar for the pair.   That was the "easy" part of this "adventure"

got the address to go pick them up.   Otherwise, shipping would be $25!   Googled mapped and printed out a location.....some Township road.

The Boss drug her feet all day, but I needed her AND her cell phone to go out and find this place.   Finally, less than an hour before dark, we hit the roads...

One road ran out....had a "P" stop to make.  made a phone call, and had to leave a message....started down a road, looking for any signs with his "town" on it.

RINNNNNGGG!   "Yeah, you all went too far the other way"   Got a few directions, wound up in a small town, call him again....next town, then on through, hang a left...

Call him up again.."yep, too far.    Turn around.......there is a left turn onto a dirt road.  ill be watching for yer headlights"

Ever hear the saying...."Turn off the paved road"???    Ok, finally pulled into the place....Jeff Foxworthy would feel right at home.     It was a bit dark, but there MIGHT have been a engine hanging from a tree by a chain..

Handed the fellow a dollar bill, and then tried to navigate my way back home.    Wound up in the nearby "Big City" and stopped for a bite to eat.    talked to a local cop, asking how to get to a road to take me back home.

And now, just what did that dollar bill buy?

On the left.  made by Millers Falls, a Mohawk-Shelburne #4 sized smooth plane.   On the right,  an Ohio Tool Co. No. 035  Razee smoother.   The Mohawk is complete, the Razee needs a few things.

Another few of these two "Fifty cent" planes

Rusty & Krusty.   Might take a day or two to clean up?   I MIGHT have the missing parts in the spares box for the Ohio Tool Co, plane.    It will need a chipbreaker for the tapered iron, and a lever cap.   Front knob has a small chip out on it's base.  Sole looked good..

A couple swipes with a smooth plane to clean it up.

Little town call Marengo,OH.......About 50-70 miles away.....The No. 035 MIGHT just pay for the gas....

Frog was loose, lateral will need to be re-bent.

Rear handle needs a new horn...might have a complete handle...somewhere.   iron frame will need awhile under the wire wheels.   Adjuster wheel and it's right hand threads  works, just a clean up.

Boss has decreed..NO MORE LONG-ARSED DrIVES THROUGH THE COUNTYSIDE>>>>>

Might have been worth the trip?

Ok, had one day to:

Rehab two planes

Take the boss out for supper

Take the boss out for shopping

Replace a light fixture in the Burnt Room

Trim out the burnt room's clost door opening

Soooo?  I did actually get the entire job jar list done today....

As for the planes?

This is after a tear-down, scrape the old finish off, wire wheel the metal parts, replace the knob's bolt. I also sanded the sole flat, well at least flatter than it was...

shavings.thumb.JPG.5b8021824dd092625a026

Sharpened the iron up, mated a chipbreaker from the spares box to it, dug up a Lever cap as well.   Made some walnut shavings with the Ohio Tool Co. No.035....

And as for the other plane?

Handles came painted black. I cleaned the sides up, flattened the sole.  Sharpened the iron, mated the chipbreaker to it.  All bolts were wire whelled clean.   Inside of the base was wire wheeled to remove the crud and rust.    painted black, the frog was cleaned, tuned up, and a black touch up paint job.

That lever cap?   Came from the spares box.    I tried to strip the old paint off the Mohawk one, was just way too rough a casting.    Never would have gotten it smooth enough for a paint job.   Still have it, it was tossed in with the other spares.

Will need to putty a small gap in the door trim, maybe I can do that tomorrow?    I'm beat.....for some reason...

I am surprised you could get to Marengo from your place .laughing-hard-smiley-emoticon.gif But there's little doubt those babies will spruce right up with your care. I'll leave the value equation to you.....

Just did a second tune up on the 035.    As for the Mohawk-Shelburne, it now has a Millers Falls lever cap.   Which would make the plane a Millers Falls No. 900

Still need a chipbreaker for the Ohio 035.   Maybe next time...I just pay the shipping...
