Friday, Nov 6th, What's on your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

i'm a little late today but that's okay. It has been a good day, today my job was posted to get ready for my retirement in March. I'm ready for them to get someone hired and let me get them trained.

This weekend we are headed to Nashville on Saturday to purchase an enclosed 6'x10' trailer. Got to have something to load all of our inventory in for the shows we plan on doing next year. Sunday may be a rest day or just goof off in the shop.

Not a lot going on around here. We got rained out for our November First Friday so I am even home early on a First Friday night.

So how about the rest of you, what's on your Patriot Woodworker agenda this weekend.

We here at TPW love to hear about and see your projects. So come on and post your weekend plans.

Road trip to work on a Loft Bed Project for a GrandBRAT......then a trip to the ER when I got back home....back was acting up.

Well John,

I'm going to try to get a bit more done on my Steampunk "Komputator" build project.

I found one of those little wine cooler refrigerators with the glass door sitting along side the road for our once a month bulk trash pick up. :o

Well you know me, I can't resist a freebie.

The glass in the door was broke, but the TEC (Thermal Electric Cooler) (Peltier) unit works fine. :D

I'm going to use it to cool the upper motherboard area of the case. Have to keep things cool. B)

Today I was taking apart some old lamps to salvage the beveled glass panels. More parts for the same project. <_<

Well, sitting here on a heating pad for the lower back.   Not much else to do....soooo, here is a few looks at what almost got done today

6 or 7 saw cuts with a cicular saw per dado.   Chisel to knock the waste out, and smooth the bottom..

using the assembled parts to act as a workbench.  lags to hold the 4x4 to the frame, will have a few screws to attach the 2x6s in place

and add the other post.  made a mess today, too..messy_floor.thumb.JPG.d7d8ebd7f7f7cbce5b

About as far as i got, back fired up big time.    I still had to sweep up my mess, though..

Just admiring my good fortune

Still not doing much woodwork.

I decided that I needed to make an open throat  Steady Rest for my lathe so I ordered some 2" square 1/4"thick steel tubing and some 3/8 x 4" flat  stock and so far I have  come up with this

When setting up the large three piece bar  I had a Center-Line scribed  in the flat stock and one in the end of the steel tube and dropped a plumb bob to make sure I was spot on.

Ohh I did do "some" woodworking.

I took apart a really un-useful project I'd made some years ago out of 2x4s and 3/4" ply to make an A frame type rolling plywood-cart.  IT sure looked like it was going to be useful but it just took up a lot of space.

So it became the Welding cart in the back ground with a stack of little maple drawers for my welding stuff

Here it is

Steady%20rest-000_zpsxiabx6ke.jpg

Yes that's the top off my old Craftsman 113 TS  still painted  orange-red.  It was flatter than my welding table and I needed a flat surface when I welded up that big bar - which by the way is balanced so that it stood there all by itself  for me to tack into place.

Why'd I paint the TS  top?

I had a humidity problem.  It was a really bad humidity problem.

Ohh see that wood thing  on the table?  Not the big block of maple but the other wood thing.

That was my very first woodworking square that I made more than 40 years ago from some scrap oak.  It still works great.

Nice Clamps Lew ~!!!

Someone here in this forum welcomed me to turning when I first got that lathe  saying "Welcome to the world's most expensive hobby."    Well, it sure would be if I couldn't make the tools I want.

Thanks, Cliff!

When I made my steady rest, I found that the wheels would limit the diameter of the turning. The three skate wheels are about 2" in diameter and are positioned at 120° apart. If I bring the wheel supports all the way to the center, the perimeter of the wheels touch each other, before they "close" the internal space for holding very small diameter turnings. To help reduce this problem, I attach one wheel to the opposite side of its' wheel support. This offsets the wheel by the thickness of the wheel support and allows this wheel to be moved closer to the turning without touching the other two wheels. Smaller diameter wheels would probably be the answer, but that's all I had at the time.
