October 30, 201510 yr In a LARGE, LONG package, no less. Won a feebay auction, paid just over 12.50 plus $9 for shipping. They had local pickup....90 miles each way was a bit much. So, after cutting and tearing away at the cardboard, paper, and tape, some Rusty & Krusty stuff came to light... At 22" long, this be a Stanley No.7c....type 10. Ihad to supply a rear wood handle, and am waiting on a brass nut for it. Otherwise pretty much intact. Did I say Rusty? There be a lot of grooviness going on there....but haven't found any cracks. Front knob seems to be ok. Might take a while to get this old plane back to new...even for me.
October 31, 201510 yr Author way too tired tonight....too many trips to see doctors....took the Boss to a high school football game tonight.... Tried to get a little bit done, new wire wheels to clean the crud off. maybe tomorrow I can have this thing making shavings? It MIGHT take a while....even for me. This is one big plane. About like comparing an old A-4 skyhawk to a C5A transport, as compared to the No. 4s to the new No.7 Might need a bigger til?
October 31, 201510 yr Author Well, I got most of the job done last night, it was after midnight though. Finished setting things up on it today, when I could see better. Had to move the frog back just a hair, mouth was a bit too tight. Handle is a "stand-in" until I find something better. It needs a new lateral lever, as the disc is missing. Sooo, here we go.. Yeah, White Oak vs a Battleship? Yeah the handle is bad, but I will replace WHEN I can afford a new one. Sides are spiffy, there is a chip-out on the side near the stern.... Sole cleaned up nicely, and flat. Had to re-arrange the plane till a bit.. Makes the old No.6c, type 10 look small??? Edited October 31, 201510 yr by steven newman
October 31, 201510 yr Author Just back from a little research on this plane @ Hyperkitten . Seems this is not a type 10, but seems to be a Type9. A wee bit older than I thought. Still, for less than $25, still not too bad..
November 2, 201510 yr Author Steve, That's not a battleship, it's an aircraft carrier. I did have the aircraft carrier inthe shop for a while...them Stanley No.8c, type 9's are BIG. and W I D E.....this one is a little easier to handle. More info on the No.7c......it has elements of both a type 8, and a type 9. Might have been made right at the end of one, and the start of the next. About like my old Dodge caravan.....2003 parts in a 2004 model.
November 4, 201510 yr I was looking at the plane and thinking it was older than a type 10. You might be correct in it is between the 8 and 9. Either way, it is a nice old plane and one to hang on to. They don't make those like that anymore.
November 4, 201510 yr Steve here is a screen capture I did from "The Superior Works" Page. That is defiantly an older bottom. There may be a couple of pat dates on the lever arm also. At any rate it is a nice old plane and a nice job on the restoration. Plane frog designs.tiff
