October 28, 201510 yr Recently our college minister came to me and wanted a lectern to use but he wanted something different. He wanted one that was unique and he loves Walnut. So he ask me if I could find an old tripod and make him a lectern from it. Well as it turned out I was at the auction a week or so later and they had one come up for auction. I won the bid and got this great old surveyor tripod. I removed the piece from the top that held the transit and put a metal plate on to hold the Walnut top. I painted the bottom side of the metal black and drilled four holds in from the corners to attach the Walnut top. There is a brass handle that controls the tilt of the top and there is another knob under the top that will allow it to turn left and right. The top was some really cool walnut with a small crack and a knot hole. The grain was just so cool with so much going on with it. I put five coats of Deft Lacquer on the top. He plans on having his Bible and iPad on the top. He was leading a college meeting tonight and I was excited that we got it finished and to him this afternoon. Turned out really nice.
