August 9, 201510 yr Ok, yard sale finds the other day...spent $5 on three saws like objects, and $2 on a H/P #6500 OfficeJet printer thingy...Son got the Printer up and running. needs to run a phone line to it, and then I can Fax stuff..There is also a copier/scanner in it, that needs to get up and working. Black & white only, until we can get the colour inks.. Now, about them saws. One was bought mainly for the brass hardware...handle was junk, plate was worse..Got the two bolts out, tossed the rest. #2 saw? Was a "Modern" crosscut cut by Great Neck Saw Company. 8 point, straight back. Blockhead of a handle Logo is NOT a painted one. Under a thick clear coat of paint, the logo is an etch! handle just needed some work, though. Took it off the plate, clamped the handle in the vise.. Used a backswa to miter the nose a bit. Then, screwed the handle to the benchtop. Set up a 1/2"round-over bit in the router, and eased the edges on both faces.. Left the handle like this for a bit. Tried a plane first, to remove the old finish. Meh....Sanders did some of the work, A piece of an old saw blade acted as a scraper, too. had to keep refreshing the sharp edge. 1" x 30" beltsander to get into a few cureved spots. It was missing a couple leaves from the carved wheat. Added those with a chisel or two. Third ones up fromthe bottom. Plate was cleaned of the clear coat. bolts shined up.. Look a little better?. There was then saw #3...A Craftsman Special Saw. says so right in the readable etch, no less. The handle needed refinished, bolts shined up, the plate ghad a thin layer of rust. Looks a wee bit better now. There was a small kink in the blade, got that hammered out. I tried to "clock" the slots on the bolts... I need to find a way to better bring out the etch on these old saws.... Both handles now have three coats of that SMELLY BLO on them. Afternoon of fun...
