Friday, Aug 7th, What's on your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

Still no woodworking going on here in my shop as I am still waiting on the feeling to come back into my thumb and first two fingers on my left hand.

But things are still going on.

I dropped off a few logs at the saw mill earlier. They were Hickory and Chestnut.

Here is a picture of the logs as they are being sawn. I love the color and grain of the Hickory. I am having part of it cut into slabs.

Can't wait to get it and put it in the barn drying. I think it is going to be some awesome wood.

So that is about it in my shop for this weekend. Share with us what's on Your Patriot Woodworker agenda this weekend. We here at TPW love to see all the wonderful projects you are working on. Post those pictures. and share with us.

That's a load of wood and the color is magnificent!!

I'll be working on a gun case, if my friend delivers the hardware-

Gun case is looking awesome Lew! Been following the progress pics in the gallery. Love those hand cut DT's!

Absolutely beautiful Hickory John!

No woodworking for me this weekend.  My son in law underwent an aortic heart valve replacement today and we have been caregivers for three granddauhters for the past two days and three more.  SIL is doing well.

Lew it is looking awesome. love the dovetails.

I've been keeping busy making up some more license plate bird houses and feeders. We sold out last week on the Piggy Banks also so I have one just about ready to paint.

The feeder I made for my son who lives in Kansas. I'll have to ship it off on Monday.

Nice repurpose of the license plates!

I remember when PA used to issue new ones every year or so. Not any more.

These feeders and houses are cool. :)

As for me, I'm making a couple of file handles and a couple of pens if I get them glued up and dried early enough. Otherwise the pens will wait til Monday.

I'm probably also going to turn a couple of bottle stopper heads for the same person that wants the handles.

Just 3 pieces of maple glued together for one of the handles. Not glued by me but they look tight so it shouldn't be an issue

I have a single piece on the lathe now that I am working with. I'll get more pics later as I get closer to being done.

Well here is the first handle, Probably Beech wood. Its about 4 1/2" long and about 1 5/16 wide at the widest point. Very close to the original handle's dimensions of 4.5x 1 1/4"

I decided to put the maple piece above aside and go for an option of Cherry since I have a piece that was sent to me by one of the guys that wants the handles made.

A fun day so far :)

Lew,

It's been quite a few years since new plates in WI. also.

The yearly stickers are at least 1/4" thick now there are so many of them.

Wishing the very best to your SIL, Ron. Hope everything turns out well for him.

Best of luck with your finger numbness, John. I know how it feels. Have had some numbness in my right thumb and first finger since running the thumb through the jointer and the finger through the TS side ways.

Lew, Love the gun case.

Larry, Those houses are really neat.

Nice turning, Charles.

Things have settled down here somewhat. Got our whole house/shop/well generator hooked up. Rather unsightly but, it works. Gonna put a lattice fence around it next week. And, I need to reconstruct the roof on the pump house, too. THEN I can get back to the Morris chairs and ottomans.

Thanks guys! Yea John, i played around with the design a bit but found this one to be the best. I will of course refine it a bit more on the next one since i have 3 to make.

These are files for chainsaw blades.

Not much got made.   Two saws wer refurbbed

Country Concert gone to...Josh Turner, with special guest Drew Baldridge.

A few yard sales..

One hughmongous ( HUGE!!!) Cruise-in car show.   Photos down in the Free for all section

One yard sale produced a H/P 6500 Printer.....OfficeJet??   son spent the rest of the day getting it working.   hey, it did cost me ( so far) a whopping $2!!

Went downtown to watch the city firemen work at a building fire rekindle.   About $500K in damages...

Insurance people are coming here again Monday...maybe they can work something out.   Son wants back in to his room....

Charles,

Do you drill the holes for the files?

Sure do Lew, That's the first thing I do before I even start actually turning it. I make a 1/8" hole for these files. I wonder though if that is enough, but since I don't have a rat tail file that I can try it on, I am not sure. The worry of course would be that the handle would split as they try to add the file to it.

I've tried drilling "stepped" holes for files but they never hold very well. Read somewhere about heating the file tang and allowing it to burn itself into the handle. I wonder if that would change the temper of the file.

Very possibly would Lew, since you'd have to get it quite hot for it to do any good as far as burning the wood. I like the stepped idea and I understand that there are bits out there that will do that but I don't have any at this time.

Here's the latest one I believe made of cherry :) A little thinner but would be great for smaller hands.
