Friday, May 15th, What's on Your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

Wow, the middle of May and it seems like time is just flying. We have completed two shows in the past two weekends and we have a two day show this weekend. It has been a busy time in the shop trying to keep inventory up and preparing for each event.

Here I am with Genevieve Gorder of HGTV at the show last weekend.

I will be taking off work a bit early today to finish up five cutting boards, six bread trays and six cheese boards. They are almost done, just need the finishing touch put on them.

When we finish on Sunday we are starting a road trip. Heading out Sunday night to Savannah, Ga for a couple of days, then up to Williamsburg, Va for a few days, then over to Hartford City to see Ron and Dorothy Dudelston. I will be Ron's guest at the Indy 500 this year and can mark that off my bucket list. Looking forward to seeing it live. But as all good things come to an end, on Monday after the race, we will be back in the truck heading back to Alabama. Then it is back to work.

So that is our weekend and week, what's on Your Patriot Woodworker agenda this weekend?

We here at TPW love to see all of your projects and hear about what is happening in your shop. So share with us a bit about what you are working on.

I'll be checking back to see what you have on your agenda!

Today I will finally get back into the shop to try and find my work bench under the clutter after being down for awhile with my total knee replacement surgery back on March 23rd. I have a friend that is a hat maker and he restored/rebuilt an old panama hat from the late 1940's early 1950's that belonged to my grandfather. After talking with him and he found out that I do woodworking he asked if I might be able to repair a wooded item for him. So I took it with me and fixed it and brought it back when he had my hat done. So he has a number of wood hat items that he wants to me to repair which are easy to do and I will make a few bucks doing it which is nice. So I picked up 8 pieces from him all made from poplar which are rather old and have split and need to be re-glued and have a couple of long pocket screws pit in them for reinforcement. So I have the items sitting in a box in the garage and will work at digging things out of the clutter so I can get these done.

Here is a photo of one of the poplar hat tools which is used to shape the brims of hats. All of them are similar and then there are 2 hat blocks that I have to glue back together and plug a hole on.

This is Qualification Weekend at Indy so I'll be dancing between the TV and the shop on Saturday.  I rubbed my crystal ball and came up with a speed of 232 for the pole speed for this year's Indy 500.  That is, if the rain holds off.  In the shop, I'm building a display case for a doctor friend of mine.  He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity and is a regional official for the fraternity and collects pledge pins.  The case is in the shape of a diamomd and his protect his collection.  Pictures are forthcoming.

Birthday money to spend!    Stopped and picked up a mitre box by Stanley Handyman...with the original box.   $3.   Looks like brand new, too

Today was West Liberty's Village Yard Sale day.    Spent about $4 for a few items.   Found a metal tool box full of rusty item..$2.   Two of the rusty items were decent chisels,  Have been cleaning them up, and turned a new handle for one of them.

Also picked a couple 24" claps...for a $1 total.   Spent the fourth dollar bill on three small pliers.   Getting things all cleaned back up

I did turn down a $10 scrollsaw....why?   Because it was the same as I bought last year, for the same price.  Didn't "need" two of them...
