Friday, April 24th, What's on Your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

Although the rain continues about every other day here, the weather is getting much better and I am enjoying getting out and getting some time in the shop. This week we got Five large End Grain cutting board ready to start through the drum sander. Might get them all sanded this weekend.

Also been working on the Custom Green Egg table. Here is the SketchUp drawing for the table.

We, (Beth and I) got it to the point of cutting the hole in the middle and spraying on the finish today. If all goes well I think we can get finished Sunday afternoon or Monday night.

The Egg Table is made of Cedar with Walnut as an accent. My customer really like Walnut but when I gave him a price for making the whole table out of Walnut he decided on the Cedar.

So just as a surprise to him, I have added the Walnut accents to give him at least some of what he wanted. I like to keep my customers happy!

So that is our weekend in the Patriot Woodworker shop, what's on your agenda in your Patriot Woodworker shop? Those of us here at TPW love to see all of the wonderful woodworking projects gong on out there so please share your project and pictures with us.

I'll be checking back in this weekend to see which Patriot Woodworkers are busy!

Another beautiful egg table, John. I'm anxious to see it with the finish, I've never seen cedar and walnut together.

Ron tells me you guys are going to the race. Have fun and stay out of trouble.

By Sunday, I should have 8 legs ready for mortises. The plan called for gluing up 4/4 stock and dressing them to get legs that are 2 1/4 square. That leaves two sides with edge grain showing. I don't care for that so, I made the legs 2/4X2 and I've resawn some oak to 1/8X21/2 to cover the edge grain. With a slight round over the edge of the 1/8 piece will be barely noticeable.

Gluing up 4 legs at a time meant I needed more clamps. Got me 10 new 6" Jorgie bar clamps, with with the 8 I had plus my 7 3/4 Pony pipe clamps on short joints, I can get 4 glued at once.

Gonna be a busy weekend...well busy for me at least. Feels good.

Well I am finally getting into the shop tomorrow!

I have a retirement gift to make one of our surveyors at work. I make these posts for every retiree. Tomorrow I'll be up to my neck in Cherry dust!

These are fun, and the guys love them. I have made about 9 or 10 of these posts. Fun fun!

On Wednesday morning about 3:00am while Tami and I were sound asleep, one wall of the clothes hanger and shelf in our Master Bedroom Closet decided to fall down under the weight of all the clothes and boxes. Needless to say we were very startled by that. Fortunately nothing else broke when it came crashing down. So on Thursday I swung by Home Depot and picked up two 10' pine boards for $11 to replace the original particle board strips that peeled away from the wall. I used 3" screws directly into the studs as opposed to the finish nails that were used in the original construction when the house was built in 2001. I also added a strip on the top of the shelf to sandwich it in so it won't go anywhere. The good thing about it all coming down was that my wife had to weed through all the old clothes that was on it as well as all of her shoes so she bagged up a bunch of stuff to donate to charity and we have more room in the closet.

No other woodworking for me this weekend. On Saturday morning I will be going shooting with some guys from church at an indoor range. I haven't gone shooting in a long time so I am looking forward to it. I still have a whole bunch of range ammo for the 9mm and 38 Spec./357 so I will take about 500 rounds and see what happens. Sunday Tami and I will be going to the Los Angels Angels game down in Anaheim, CA as they play an afternoon game with the Texas Rangers. We have a hotel down the road from the stadium near Disneyland for the night as we will be going to Disneyland on Monday to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary. Actually our anniversary is on Tuesday but Tami took Monday off so we have the time together. So we are very much looking forward to the time together over the next few days.

That would have sent me through the roof Allen, a noise in our home like that in the middle of the night.I can only imagine. Sounds like divine intervention at play here, some needy folks got some nice clothes out of the deal!

Hey Allen, been keeping up with the whole San Diego Chargers ordeal? I had no idea that was even happening! I just can't bring myself to call them the Los Angeles Chargers!

John,

I have not been following the juggling So Cal Football Team thing as you get different stories every week. LA traffic is bad enough so a new stadium would just make another level of h-e-l-l and torment for the area. The best seat for watching football is my recliner.

Yepers! I don't have to worry anyway, I don't watch sports on tv at all, the only sports I go too is my kids live games and the occasional Storms minor league games. I'll turn on Superbowl or World Series, or the Stanley Cup when they happen. But I just never got into the whole season watching thing to begin with, not saying that's a bad thing, it's not. Just not for me.

But that being said, since I am a San Diego native, I grew up with the Chargers always being San Diego, I can't see how a major city could let a club like the Chargers slip through like that. I am not aware of the politics of it all, but seems to me egos got in the way and they dug heels in and pouted, on both sides.

There are two things i am doing this weekend and pretty much every weekend for the foreseeable future.

1 Making anything with the lathe that I can, including pens, wooden eggs, mushrooms etc. Pretty much anything that anyone has shown an interest in before.

2 Cast nets, My grandmother used to make them back in the 70s before she died and I always wanted to learn how to make them so now I am learning. The cool thing is that this is something that can be done outside without having to lug around over 100 pounds of equipment. Just hook it to the clothes line and start knitting. :) If you follow my facebook page, you've probably seen an image or 2 by now but, I will post one here somewhere later.

Cleaning the barn.  Yuck, but a necessity.  I have to have it all spic and span for an Alabama visitor in the next few weeks.

That Alabama visitor has high standards Ron! I hope you can live up to them!

Just point him to a junk store and he's good, John.
