Last week ended on a not so good note and I didn't get to do much work in the shop. I have this table I have been working on and it just seems to be running into problem and problem.

So I started cutting the braces that go around the bottom and top of this table and they are mitered to 45 on each end. Last week when I cut the first one it didn't fit flush. So I got out my Wixey Protractor and started checking the saw. I put it against the fence and the blade and adjusted till it read 90.

But I moved the Wixey around the the other side of the blade and put it against the fence and the blade and got a different reading, 89.7. Not that is strange I just moved from one side of the blade to the other side.

So I checked the 45 o the side where I had 90 and it read 45.

But when I moved the Wixey to the other side and it should read 135 degrees it was 134.9.

So when I cut the pieces and put my Starrett against it the 45 was not even close.

After spending a night adjusting and moving this thing around and getting more frustrated, I shut down and went in side. The next day I called Delta and they referred me to a service center in Nashville, TN. After going through the steps with the tech, he said my fence was out of line probably cause someone slammed boards against it. Well I don't slam them against it and it isn't taken out of the shop on a job site but who knows. The other thing when I gave him the reading from one side of the blade to the other he said, "Well that's not bad, how close do you want it?" I said well I want it the same on both sides, is that too much to ask from a 600.00 saw? So the long of it for 41.00 I could purchase a new fence since the fence has no adjustments.

The fence arrived yesterday and I put it on last night. Lined up the blade and believe it or not all was good. I moved to the 45 and it was on so I cut the pieces to the right length and all looks good.

They seem to dry fit enough they will pull up now when I mount them.

So this weekend we will finish put the grain filler in and doing the final sanding and dry fit and hopefully actually get it all put together so I can get it stained and ready to install the table top.

That is my weekend plans, what about the rest of you Patriot Woodworkers, what is on your agenda this weekend? Share your projects with us. We here at TPW love to see what you are working on and follow along on your projects.

Post those projects and pictures. I'll be waiting!

Ouch to the first part - Atta boy for the second part - Doncha just love a challenge????

As for me, just strokin along getting ready for the next show - have a "shorty" tomorrow (10-2)

How about the rest of y'all?

Last week I had made a pile of hard maple 2x4s out of the 6/4 rough sawn stock I had. This was for my workbench top. Since then it's been 1 step forward, 2 steps back and I'm not sure it will be finished this weekend. Who would have though gluing together some boards would be so hard. Anyway, I ran out of biscuits, then got some more. Then I didn't have enough glue. I'm using plastic resin on this since I've always had glue creep using PVA on table tops; plastic resin solves that problem and gives me just a little more open time as well.  So with my outages and slow glue cure time, I've only got this far: three sections that are close to finish. BTW, surfacing these (post glue up) was a royal pain. Each section weighs in the neighborhood of 70# and was just tough to handle. John, I know you made a top similar to this.....I should have made mine in 4 sections like I think you said you did. That notch in the front right of the photo is for one of my vises, the other I'll do after the benchtop is fully assembled. At this point it finished at about 2 7/8" thick, 30 1/2" wide, and 79" long. I'll be really happy when this is done!

Fred that is what I figured out real quick. There were so heavy I couldn't handle them so I made four and put two together then put the two together to make the one. Took for ever but it made it easier to work with.

It is looking good though. That is going to be a nice top.

No shop time.  Working the massive  250 year old living room.  Now it's Paint.  Paint paint paint and paint  some more.

I'm only doing half the room at a time the furniture goes in the other half.

Somebody shoot me.

I still have to sand the floor

 Digital angles gauges

Don't get me going.

Try changing the battery.

They get all goofy when the voltage drops.

This old boy is recuperating from a week in Tennessee.  Monday, I start building two dressers.

Glad it all worked out in the end there John.

As for me not much planned this weekend. I'll probably jump on the lathe a bit though.

Well, I think I MIGHt try to make something out of this pile of scraps

Had a 2x4 x36" cleaned up, found that gray 2x4 x48".   The 1xs are also leftovers.    Them two LONG boards?

post-3502-0-20965600-1427595869.jpg

Are TWO 1x6x 120-1/2" planks.  Dumpster dive stuff.  One has a bit of twist to it.   Cut basically cut the twist out by using it in shorter lengths.   The Gray 2x4 needs to be cleaned up

post-3502-0-48121700-1427596044.jpg

We have ways of dealing with that.   The cutter is a Butcher iron, 2" wide.   Jack is about 15-16" long.

Single Brain Cell Sketchup is now working on a "plan" for these boards.    The same brain cell that came up with the Shaker table "plan"....

Might take awhile...

That base is solid White Oak. It took me and my Son to just turn it over.

Got to cut the top to size and put the trim moulding on. Plug the screw holes and them a final sanding and stain.

Getting there.

Got a few boards trimmed down to size, maybe a start on a top?

post-3502-0-92419300-1427601051.jpg

The wood this saw is leaning against is that gray 2x4.   Got the two edges jointed.   Used this as a prop to HANDSAW a few boards for a table's top.

Clamped three (three for now) up into the vise, and jointed  both edges

post-3502-0-72422000-1427601205.jpg

Hoping to clamp up a 36" long top from them.  Edges do look a little better, though

Between cleaning up an old saw, and doing some hand work like jointing, I'm bushed....

Great job guys :)
